Atlanta has the league's only current vacancy for a lead decision-maker in the front office, with Toronto's Masai Ujiri and Giannis Antetokounmpo's agent Alex Saratsis emerging last week as the splashiest new names that the Hawks have pursued in their quest to hire a new president of basketball operations. Yet league sources told The Stein Line last week that the Hawks have also not ruled out the prospect of suspending that search and simply hiring a senior adviser to assist Onsi Saleh, whom Atlanta promoted to general manager on the same day last month (April 21) that it dismissed Landry Fields.
Calvin Booth, Monte McNair interviewed for Hawks' President of Basketball Operations role
Two other candidates who interviewed with Atlanta this week, according to league sources, to replace the ousted Landry Fields: Former Nuggets general manager Calvin Booth and former Kings general manager Monte McNair.
Jake Fischer: So, it's not exactly a résumé for Landry Fields that's riddled with mistakes or someone that, you know, kind of needed to be ousted — like in Sacramento or like in New Orleans — where both those two teams had legitimate playoff aspirations: for the Kings and for the Pelicans. Brad Rowland: Fields on whether he's bothered by Sarr not coming in: "I don't take a large offense to that because it's nothing novel. This is something agents do." Fields also declined to give detail on what the explanation was from Sarr's side. Also said Sarr was only player to decline.
The conversation around the Hawks has been fascinating to track. Despite Hawks’ general manager Landry Fields saying the team is comfortable selecting at No. 1, league sources continue to get the impression Atlanta is open to offers for the right deal.
Landry Fields insists Hawks plan to keep No. 1 pick
Atlanta Hawks general manager Landry Fields said he likes his options for the potential top picks in the NBA draft -- and he insists he's not planning on trading the No. 1 pick, even though his phone lines remain open. "I think we're really excited by the draft," Fields said Monday as he continued to prepare for the No. 1 overall pick in the draft on June 26. "And the more that we uncover, like we go, great, I'm glad we have No. 1. I keep joking around like I'm not giving it back. So, I think we're in a really good position here. I'm excited about it, frankly."
