Joey Linn: It’s disappointing to see the way some people are talking about Bones Hyland. He’s a very confident player, and probably could have handled a couple situations in his career differently, but he’s also misunderstood. I covered him for two seasons in LA, and he’s one of the hardest working players I’ve seen up-close. Also just a really kind person. Despite being out of the Clippers rotation, he was regularly the last player still working out after practice. Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, and Russell Westbrook were some of the vets who loved Bones and spoke highly of him. Seeing some really misinformed character attacks on a guy who’s generally well-liked around the NBA.

Bones Hyland: 3 years ago they traded me. 3 years fast forward we eliminated them. I love you Minny! Wolves in 6

Dane Moore: Ayo Dosunmu is listed as questionable for Game 6 with right calf soreness and Bones Hyland is listed as questionable with left knee soreness. Dosunmu was out/rested with the calf soreness at the end of the regular season. Hyland appeared to be somewhat bothered by the knee in Game 5.

"Honestly, I’ve come a long way, bro. Two years, God first. Just honestly came a long way, bro. Two years of not playing—it’s been tough, bro, honestly. But coming here now, man, they took me in with open arms, so I got my joy back, my spirit back," Hyland said about his current run in Minnesota as the team's spark plug off the bench, averaging 8.5 points in 16.6 minutes this season.

“Just watching the game from a distance, you start to see what the team is missing, what’s wrong internally, the problems and (stuff),” Edwards said. “I think I needed that, especially going into the playoffs to see what we needed. It was big for me.” He declined to get into specifics, not wanting to give a public scouting report on what he thought was needed. If the first game is any indicator, he will focus on moving the ball on offense, getting out in transition more often for easier baskets and, per Finch’s request, guarding the opponent’s best perimeter scorer while McDaniels is out. “Just picking my spots, knowing when to be aggressive, knowing when to make the right play,” Edwards said. “And then just letting Bones and Ayo bring the ball up. I think that’s the main thing for me.”

Bones Hyland: The Vibes is High Babyyyy 🐺

Jon Krawczynski: MIN 116, PHX 104. Wolves grind out a really good win against a good team to go up by 3 games on the 7-seed. Randle: 32p, 7r Hyland: 22p, 5a Gobert: 19r Dosunmu: 19p, 5r McDaniels: 16p, 7r, 4a SloMo: 7p, 6a, 5r

After two long years in exile, Hyland was in the starting lineup thanks to both Anthony Edwards and Mike Conley sitting out. One reckless game could validate everything observers around the league had started to believe about Hyland, that he was talented but impulsive, that the scoring booms weren’t worth the busts caused by irresponsible decision-making and bad defense. He has always been a daring, confident player. It takes that kind of person to overcome all that he has faced to make it to the NBA in the first place. And here was a chance for him to show what he was made of, to prove to the league what he can do.

Hyland put the ball in his left hand, dropped his right shoulder and drove right through Keegan Murray’s chest on his way to a layup. Suddenly, a Timberwolves team that has often looked bored or uninspired during this regular season had an edge. There was a desperation in that moment, a hunger created by the struggle. “It’s like I see food at the rim,” Hyland said. “If I’ve got one-on-one in transition, I’m going right at him. It’s me and you, and I’m going to win that battle. That’s going back to never wanting to go back to how you grew up. That’s something I live with every day.”

Hyland stepped in, averaging 9.5 points and shooting 49 percent from 3 over the last 10 games — a huge boost for a team that hasn’t been able to create any dependable scoring off the bench other than Naz Reid. “I love having him on the team,” Wolves coach Chris Finch said. “He’s the same every day. He’s a super happy guy. He’s one of these guys who brings joy to the game in the way that he plays it.”
