Carmelo Anthony on his playing days with the Knicks: 'I understood the people'

No. 7 still garners a raucous reception every time he is announced to the home crowd on the scoreboard at Madison Square Garden.  “Wanting to be in New York and wanting to accept and take on that challenge, I understood the assignment, and I understood what I was up against,” said Anthony, who set the Knicks’ franchise record with 62 points in one game in 2014. “I understood the people, as far as how they hold you, how they look at you and how they receive you.  “Win, lose or draw … we’re talking about the Mecca of basketball. Our city, so nice they named it twice. So for me to come and represent that, and do it with such grace and such respect and take whatever comes with that, I was willing to do that.”

Ben Simmons mulling retirement?

Ben Simmons mulling retirement?

Ben Simmons has generated interest from the Knicks and another team but is also questioning whether he even wants to continue playing in the NBA next season, The Post has learned. The former All-Star and Rookie of the Year, who has struggled recently with injuries and handling the public pressures of the league, is an option for the Knicks because of his upside as an elite defender and athlete to fill their backup point guard spot, a league source said. However, Simmons, who has accumulated DNPs the past few seasons, and over $200 million in career earnings, is sending a message that he isn’t sure “if he wants to continue,” another source added.

Pablo Torre on how Jalen Brunson arrived to Knicks: Certainly it was interesting

Pablo Torre on how Jalen Brunson arrived to Knicks: Certainly it was interesting

Dan Patrick: Is there something in there with Jalen Brunson? Pablo Torre: Well, look, how he arrived at the Knicks, this is where I will have to defer to the reporting I may or may not do on this. Certainly was interesting, right? Like, okay, that's a pretty good deal for the Knicks. Anyway, I don't want to get ahead of myself in terms of. Patrick: That's a tease, though. That's a tease. Torre: It's a bit of a tease. I'm showing a little ankle with you. I always show a little bit more ankle than I should with you. By the way, subscribe, like, and subscribe. But the thing about how often this happens is a really fascinating question because I would argue that it doesn't happen to this scale and with this level of documentation, which is only enabled because of the collapse of this fraudulent company. The other stuff, look, historically, right? I was assuming because I'm maybe dumb, like you would give a stock tip or something, right? Like have someone else be multiple degrees away. You wouldn't do it through a company that has its signage on your building, but that's what our sources say is exactly the thing that happened.

Jim Boeheim on criticism Carmelo Anthony received from former coaches: He made his teams better—sometimes that’s all you can ask

Jim Boeheim on criticism Carmelo Anthony received from former coaches: He made his teams better—sometimes that’s all you can ask

You often defended Melo throughout his NBA career when he got criticized in Denver and New York. How George Karl and Phil Jackson’s criticisms about Melo land with you? Boeheim: “Well, the thing I think about the NBA is that he made every team that he was on better than they were. Whether it was Denver or the Knicks, he made them better. They had to go up against the Lakers and the Spurs in Denver. They couldn’t do it, but he made the team better. That’s all you can do sometimes as players. You can’t make a team a championship team by yourself. You have to have a lot of parts to it. His time in Denver, there were some great teams with the Lakers and the Spurs. He made them better, and that’s all you can do as a player.”

An esteemed member of the NBA coaching circle believes …

An esteemed member of the NBA coaching circle believes Tom Thibodeau’s dismissal was nonsensical. “Should he have been fired? Hell no,” Ty Lue, the current Clippers coach, said on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast. “I mean, it’s the first time they’ve been to the conference finals in 25 years. Twenty-five years! And so, the city was on fire, the fans were on fire. The players did a hell of a job. And Thibs did a hell of a job. And to take a team to their first [conference finals] in 25 years and then get fired, like, it just doesn’t make sense.”
