Sarah Todd: Brice Sensabaugh, Taylor Hendricks, Svi Mykhailiuk and KJ Martin are here to watch the Jazz Summer League team. Also, all Jazz players on the court are wearing warmup shirts that have Frank Layden and the #1 on the back.
Multiple team sources, interviewed by The Athletic, provided some answers. Utah isn’t currently sure where it will take its roster once the offseason hits. But, it can go one of two ways. One is to build around forward Lauri Markkanen with a veteran-laden core. In that case, expect the Jazz to hit the market and attempt to secure veteran help to bolster their roster. The other way is to double down on the Jazz’s many young players on their roster: Keyonte George, Isaiah Collier, Walker Kessler, Taylor Hendricks and Kyle Filipowski, along with last year’s lottery pick, Cody Williams.
Second, Hendricks said he’s going to be 100% by May. Now, this blurb may have given the Jazz’s injury team a heart attack, because a few minutes after the interview, the Jazz’s public relations department clarified with writers that the 100% means he’ll be good to do “basketball activities” by then — which means practice, not games. The plan, the team said, is still for Hendricks to skip summer league, which is all the way in July.
During that same timeout, second-year guard Keyonte George was not in the huddle. He sat at the end of the bench hunched over, not really paying attention to what was going on between Filipowski and Sexton. Then when head coach Will Hardy joined the huddle, George slowly walked around the corner of the court with a towel over his head. Even John Collins and Taylor Hendricks, wearing street clothes, were engaged in what was happening with the rest of the team and listening in to what Hardy had to say. And this isn’t the first time that George has seemed disconnected or frustrated in a negative way.
