On Tuesday, a little more than a year after Leonsis and Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin announced with great fanfare a deal to build an area in the Potomac Yards neighborhood in Alexandria, Va. — a plan that collapsed under fierce opposition a few months later — the D.C. City Council formally approved $515 million in public funding for Monumental. It will allow the company to transform the arena that has been the home of the NBA and NHL teams since 1997 and bring it in line with new arenas constructed in both leagues over the last three decades. The city will also buy the arena from Monumental for $87.5 million, in line with the city’s ownership of Nationals Park and Audi Field. Monumental would then immediately lease the arena from the city in what is known as a “sale/leaseback” arrangement. For its part, Monumental is pledging $285 million toward the arena renovation. Monumental currently manages the arena venue and will continue to do so in the new arrangement. Bowser said the deal would be a “catalytic” investment in the city’s future.
Delonte West arrested for trespassing
Delonte West has been arrested yet again, TMZ Sports has learned. The Fairfax County Police Department tells us ... the former NBA star was thrown behind bars in Virginia on Nov. 2 -- after he was accused of trespassing.
Two-time NBA slam dunk champion and Gate City native, Mac McClung visited Gate City Middle School. McClung returned to his former school to speak with Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, who was also visiting the school. The pair even played basketball with two students.
Orlando Magic guard Cole Anthony left Archbishop Molloy in Queens for Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. Detroit Pistons forward Taj Gibson left Brooklyn for Stoneridge Prep in California. Philadelphia 76ers center Mo Bamba left the Bronx for Westtown School in Pennsylvania. “There are still players that come (out of) New York, but the problem is so many of them leave,” said Ron Naclerio, the head coach at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Queens and the all-time winningest public school coach in New York history. “I hate that it’s happening,” he added.

Kyle Guy retires at age 26
A college star at Virginia, Kyle Guy has retired from professional basketball at the age of just 26. Virginia University has announced that Guy has joined the program as an athlete development mentor and special assistant.
Justin Anderson has joined FC Barcelona. The 30-year-old small forward / shooting guard from Virginia is arriving on a one-season deal through to 30 June 2025. Anderson joins from Valencia Basket, where he has played since December 2023, and is the second new addition to the basketball team after his compatriot Kevin Punter. With his powerful physique, he brings experience and versatility to the side in what will be his third season outside of the United States.
Virginia drops criminal charges against Delonte West
Multiple criminal cases against former NBA guard Delonte West were dismissed Tuesday after Virginia prosecutors decided to no longer pursue charges against him, according to court records reviewed by ESPN. The cases centered on charges of felony drug possession and violation of pretrial conditions and were tied to separate arrests, the former on March 17 and the latter on June 6.

Finney-Smith attended with Lutin and Harrison, who traveled with the forward and participated in the proceedings as Kilgore brought in written character testimonials on Doe from various Mavs officials, including Cuban and CEO Cynt Marshall. Kilgore also needed to explain to the parole board how Finney-Smith and his family could provide a stable home, financial support and employment after Big L’s release. He’d live in a home purchased by Finney-Smith in Chesapeake, Va. with Desiree and a cousin, and work for the family’s foundation.

Virginia senior point guard Reece Beekman has declared for the 2024 NBA Draft, forgoing his final year of eligibility, he announced in a social media post on Wednesday morning.
Ryan Dunn will enter the 2024 NBA Draft. The Virginia small forward told ESPN his decision on Tuesday.
