Sources across the league strongly believe that Orlando, which is about $5 million into the luxury tax, will make a move to get under. Moving on from guard Tyus Jones' expiring $7 million deal would solve that, but not the massive money crunch coming next season, when Banchero's extension kicks in. (The Magic are already projected to be well into the luxury tax in 2026-27 with just 10 players on the roster.) And if Orlando doesn't move on from Jonathan Isaac's non-guaranteed deal, it will be a second apron team.

To the untrained eye, his methods are unorthodox. But for nearly two decades, his approach has also been admired, adored and, yes, followed. “He’s easy to follow because he’s the hardest worker in the locker room. When your big dog is that type of worker, it’s easy to follow,” Magic guard Tyus Jones, who played with Durant in Phoenix, told Yahoo Sports. “He’s a great leader — I know there’s a narrative about him as a leader, but there’s not one way to lead. You don’t have to follow a certain script.”

“There was just less money,” said the Orlando Magic’s Tyus Jones, one of the best, if not the best, backup point guards in the NBA who has been a free agent each of the last two years and both times signed contracts for less than the average player’s salary. “I feel like if the apron wasn’t there, I would have got an extension (instead of) being traded here,” opined Norman Powell, now of the Miami Heat and formerly of the LA Clippers, who was the latter’s second-leading scorer and top 3-point shooter last season.

One of your new teammates, a guy Magic fans aren’t super familiar with yet, is Tyus Jones. You’ve obviously played with him before. What’s it like to reunite with him? And what can Magic fans expect to see from Tyus this season? Desmond Bane: Yeah, Tyus—he’s one of my favorite teammates I’ve ever played with. In the locker room, he’s a great presence. Great family man. And on the court—he’s steady. We call him Stones, and that’s exactly what he is. He’s a rock. Whether it’s making the right pass, hitting a big shot, or getting the team organized—he’s the guy you can always count on. Doesn’t matter if he’s starting or coming off the bench, he’s a centerpiece in any lineup. Someone you can always turn to, and he’ll be there. He’s consistent. He’s reliable.

“Paolo and Franz and them, they’re coming into their own right now,” Shammgod told NBC Sports “They’re at the right age where they still young, but they, they young enough to dare. Dare to be great. And I, I believe like Paolo and Franz is going to be great, but Desmond Bane, Jalen Suggs, Anthony Black, we got Tyus Jones. Now we got, we got so many great players. “And they all right. And I feel like right now they all are ready to make their mark. So I’m just happy and honored to be a part of it.”

Jason Beede: I asked new #Magic guard Tyus Jones about his relationship with Jalen Suggs: “That’s my little brother,” said Jones, who has known him since Suggs was in 3rd-4th grade. “We’ve got a tremendous relationship … It’s crazy how life works. It’s a surreal feeling…” Full remarks: pic.x.com/4BMRBkMbpf

Jason Beede: When I asked new #Magic guard Tyus Jones about Orlando coach Jamahl Mosley, he said the two have already discussed spacing and different actions: “… He’s studying the game, he’s trying to continue to improve himself as a coach, but he wants the team to improve as well.” More: pic.x.com/LqD6iIF3kC

Jason Beede: I asked new #Magic guard Tyus Jones about Orlando’s talent and the team he’s joining: “The talent's through the roof. This team has everything you need to win a championship … All of the pieces are going to flow together and I'm excited to see it all come together.”

Jason Beede: Before diving into our chat with Tyus Jones and Jeff Weltman, along with video from summer league practice, I wanted to share that #Magic rookie Jase Richardson has a sore right ankle but is “progressing well,” per coach Ameer Bahhur, who added they’re “not too worried about it.”

The Orlando Magic have signed free agent guard Tyus Jones, President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deal are not disclosed. “We are excited to welcome Tyus (Jones) to the Orlando Magic family,” said Weltman. “He is the ultimate pro, who will bring to our team a blend of IQ, playmaking and shooting. Known for his character and leadership, Tyus will be a tremendous mentor to our young core.”
Marc Stein: UPDATE: League sources tell @TheSteinLine that Orlando is indeed adding Bucks assistant Joe Prunty as well as God Shammgod to Jamahl Mosley’s coaching staff … on top of on-court additions Desmond Bane and Tyus Jones and the draft selections of Jase Richardson and Noah Penda.
