Bennett Durando: With Christian Braun returning tonight, sounds like the Nuggets may rest Spencer Jones so that he’s available tomorrow for back-to-back in New York, per sources. He has one game of eligibility remaining on his two-way contract until Denver can convert him to a standard deal.

Coming out of high school in Kansas, the 6-foot-7, three-star recruit Spencer Jones was hoping basketball would help him land at a reputable college, not the NBA. It worked out perfectly when he committed to Stanford in 2019. “I was not planning on making it big,” Jones tells Front Office Sports. “The goal was just to use basketball to get into a place like [Stanford]. Everything else kind of felt like a bonus.” It was only after his sophomore season in 2020–21 that the NBA became a realistic option. But he was expected to be a second-round pick at best, so he believed a Stanford degree should take priority. “Spencer has always liked basketball, but he never was one of those guys that said, ‘My dream was playing in the NBA,’” Dwayne Jones, Spencer’s father, tells FOS.

You can now count on one hand the number of NBA games Spencer Jones is allowed to play under the terms of his two-way contract. He’s down to his last five, after logging a team-high 38 minutes Friday in a 102-100 win over the Bucks. Jones, 24, has been an unlikely contributor for the Nuggets in what was supposed to be his second season splitting time between them and their G League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Gold. He’s been active for 45 of Denver’s first 46 games at the NBA level, has played in 41 of them and has started 29.

Similar to Watson, Nuggets two-way forward Spencer Jones has made the most of his opportunities while becoming a key rotation player and a fill-in starter this season. The 24-year-old 3-and-D forward has shot well from the field (.510) and beyond the arc (.389). As a result, Jones will eventually have his contract converted to a standard NBA deal, league sources told HoopsHype.

Hunter and Ace were animated throughout the game. They reacted to each one of Cooper’s career-high four 3-pointers, by throwing up three fingers and occasionally mimicking the popular “Ice in my Veins” celebration. They rose to their feet once more in the third quarter when Cooper threw down a more vicious dunk over Spencer Jones. “That’s the stuff we’ve been watching him do since he was at Duke,” said 21-year-old Hunter, who also played high school basketball at Nokomis. “It’s cool to see, especially sitting here with my other brother. We get to watch him and really see him grow as a player. He gets more confident every game. It’s been pretty special.”
