A left-handed player himself, Murray-Boyles grew up watching and trying to emulate James Harden, but as his game started to take shape, his influences changed. He admired like-minded forwards such as Draymond Green, Aaron Gordon, Jalen Williams, Toumani Camara, and another player with famously big and quick hands, former Raptor Kawhi Leonard. He studied the way they used their length, physicality and anticipation, and how they balanced being aggressive without taking too many unnecessary risks.

“When it comes to the last couple weeks for you, what went into the assembly of this roster?” David Adelman: “Yeah, I mean it was a lot of conversations with Ben and John and Josh. I think we were trying to find pieces that fit — not just names that people knew. We feel like all these guys do complement the group that’s been here, the group that’s accomplished so much over all these years in Denver. And I can tell you right now just from my messaging with Aaron Gordon, Jamal Murray, Nikola Jokic — those guys are excited. And that brings something new for us. They feel like a new gym is going to be there. And for those guys who have been around for so long, sometimes you need that. You need a little bit of change, and this change is a good change.”

“I never said, ‘No.’ There was never a doubt in my mind that I was going to play,” Gordon said after Game 7. “The only thing that made me doubt playing was the MRI. The MRI told me something worse than what I was feeling.”

When asked what he was most proud of this season, he took a moment. “I guess just being able to compete this season without my brother by my side,” Aaron Gordon said. “I knew he was with me. I knew he was staying with me. But I think even coming out here and just competing is something that is all right.”

Their season was over in Oklahoma City, as was the interim portion of Adelman’s tenure after 17 games in charge. He coached almost as many Game 7s (two) as he did regular-season contests (three). That’s how preposterous the circumstances of his temporary promotion were. At least one player unambiguously hopes it’s more than temporary. “I love DA,” Aaron Gordon said. “I hope he’s here next year. I hope he’s our coach. I hope he gets an entire training camp and a whole offseason.” “I’m hoping he gets that job,” added Michael Porter Jr. “I think he’s a great, personable coach.”
