Who could the Knicks sign as two-way players? I wouldn’t be surprised if New York ended up signing second-round pick Mohamed Diawara to one of its three two-way spots. I’ve heard rumblings of that potentially happening since summer league. After that, Kevin McCullar could return in one of the other two-way spots. It is my understanding, after talking to several people around the league, that McCullar isn’t eligible for the second-round exception slot on the main roster because he has one year of service. That spot has to go to someone who hasn’t had an NBA contract, and McCullar played last season on a two-way deal. For McCullar to make the main roster, the Knicks would have to sign him using their veteran minimum slot or make a trade to open up another space. I don’t see the former happening.

It’s Kevin McCullar Jr.’s first summer league and, in many ways, his first NBA season is still upcoming. Yes, he was drafted in 2024. And yes, he played four games with the Knicks this past season. But McCullar’s rookie campaign was derailed by a knee problem. He didn’t participate in training camp or the Vegas games or most of the calendar events. “This is really my real rookie season,” McCullar said Sunday after pouring in 30 points in a 94-81 summer league loss to the Celtics. “Last year I just got to be able to get my feet wet a little bit. … I love playing and I missed it for so long. Now it’s pretty much my rookie season.”

Michael Scotto: The New York Knicks and Kevin McCullar have agreed to a two-way contract, league sources told @hoopshype . McCullar earned All-Big 12 First Team honors this past season at Kansas. He was also named to the Big 12 All-Defensive Team and earned All-Big 12 Third Team honors in 2023.

“I think Kevin McCullar is outside the top 20 picks,” an NBA scout told HoopsHype. “The basketball guys don’t get that hopped up on his age, even though the analytics guys do. The draft has gotten to the point where guys are getting drafted and shouldn’t be. You’re drafting a person for how fast you can get them ready in two years. They’ll spend most of their time in the G League.”
