Where were you and what was your initial reaction when you first saw Jaren Jackson Jr. get traded? Cedric Coward: I was right next to him. We were walking up the stairs, going to practice, and next thing you know, he's turning around, walking down the stairs. And I was like, "Oh, okay, what's going on?" Next thing you know, you hear the news from our coaches. And then we just shared a moment in the locker room. You're like brothers, man. And that's where all my teammates, Vince [Williams], Jock [Landale], Jitty [John Konchar], like all of them, like you share a moment with those guys, like understanding what they meant to you. Even though you didn't know them long, they got a special place in my heart for sure.

But before practice started, reality set in. Coach Tuomas Iisalo gathered the team together and revealed that Jaren Jackson Jr., Jock Landale, John Konchar and Vince Williams Jr. were being traded to the Utah Jazz. "For me, it was just initial shock," forward GG Jackson told the Commercial Appeal on Feb. 4. "I didn't really know how to react. On the way to the plane, it kind of hit me a little bit."

Grizzlies PR: Status Update: John Konchar is available this afternoon against Brooklyn. Olivier-Maxence Prosper, Javon Small and Jahmai Mashack (Two-Way Transfers) are out.

Kellan Olson: The Grizzlies without Morant, Coward, Edey, Clarke, Jerome, Pippen and Konchar just beat the Spurs the night before hosting the Suns. Great years for former Sun Jock Landale and Cam Spencer. Landale had 19-9. Spencer hit the game-winner with 21-7-8 and 0 turnovers.

The Grizzlies will look to create more cap space to renegotiate and extend Jaren Jackson Jr. To help obtain that objective, a trade candidate to monitor is John Konchar, league sources told HoopsHype.

Memphis has shown some cards around the league that it is looking into consolidation trades, as evidenced by the team's recent efforts to ship Luke Kennard and John Konchar to Brooklyn for Dorian Finney-Smith. But that would have been a much smaller deal than adding Marcus Smart or Brandon Clarke to the package as would be required for Butler. Smart and Clarke both rank as players Memphis values quite highly, sources said.

Finally, let’s talk about Brooklyn’s road not taken. There was a rumored deal, first reported by NBA reporter Marc Stein, that had the Memphis Grizzlies sending a protected first-round pick along with Jon Konchar and Luke Kennard to the Nets for Finney-Smith and possibly getting a second-rounder in return. My spies tell me this was an absolutely legit offer, and thus represents an interesting, if low-level, sliding doors moment for Brooklyn.

The Lakers package was chosen over Memphis’ offer of a first-round pick, John Konchar and Luke Kennard. But sources said the Grizzlies’ pick was so heavily protected it might never have been conveyed, and Memphis also demanded the Nets’ second-rounder. In Finney-Smith, the Nets are losing a well-liked leader. “Always good energy, always in a good mood,” Noah Clowney said. “My dog, somebody I relied on heavily as far as the emotional roller coaster that you can have in this league, especially at my age. Great guy. Great vibes, always.”

Michael Scotto: Before the Brooklyn Nets traded Dorian Finney-Smith to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Memphis Grizzlies offered a top-15 protected 2025 first-round pick, Luke Kennard and John Konchar to the Nets for Finney-Smith and second-round considerations, league sources told @hoopshype.
