Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner and fiancee and fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson were arrested on suspicion of assault and disorderly conduct following a fight at their home in suburban Phoenix. The two 24-year-olds were booked into jail in Phoenix following their arrests Wednesday and later released. Agents for the players did not immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday. Officers arrested Griner and Johnson, who plays for the Tulsa Shock, after a fight between the couple turned physical, Goodyear police spokeswoman Lisa Kutis said. No weapons were involved, and neither woman required hospital care for their minor injuries, Kutis said.

Former WNBA star Chamique Holdsclaw is in custody after being accused of shooting into a woman's car after using a bat to break its windows. Atlanta police said Thursday that the incident happened Tuesday after the Olympic gold medalist followed 29-year-old Jennifer Lacy to her car. Lacy plays for the Tulsa Shock. No one was injured. Lacy identified the 35-year-old Holdsclaw, one of the biggest stars in women's college basketball history during her career at Tennessee, as an ex-girlfriend. They were teammates with the Atlanta Dream in 2009.

Former NBA player Tracy Murray is joining the coaching staff of the WNBA's Tulsa Shock for the rest of the season. The team said Monday that Murray will be an assistant under interim head coach Teresa Edwards. Murray played for UCLA in college before a 12-year NBA career, spent with six teams. He retired from the NBA in 2004 and has been a radio broadcaster for UCLA men's games.

The Republic

The nation's first basketball fan made an appearance at a WNBA game Sunday afternoon in Washington. Security at Verizon Center was airtight in anticipation of the visit of President Obama at the Washington Mystics-Tulsa Shock game. It's believed to be the first time a sitting president has attended a WNBA game in the league's 14-year history. Joined by his younger daughter, Sasha, and flanked by team owner Ted Leonsis and team president Sheila Johnson, Obama made his entrance just before tipoff, and stood and cheered the two teams along with the crowd, which gave him a standing ovation as he entered the court.
