But mostly, they remain unsold because Jody Allen hasn’t wanted to sell them. “She did get a lot of pressure from people to sell soon after Paul passed,” says Bert Kolde, Paul Allen’s college roommate at Washington State, who has worked closely with the family since the mid-1980s. “People just assumed that she would have to sell both teams soon, or in the near future.”
Kristaps Porzingis: “Honestly, I’ve felt good everywhere. Even in Washington, I was extremely happy—no one paid too much attention to who was playing there. I could just go out, play, and be happy. I think people noticed that—me smiling, enjoying the game. That stuck with them. Of course, the championship win and all that helped too. But I expected the trade, so it didn’t come as a surprise. And I ended up in a place that’s actually a good situation for me—not necessarily one I dreamed of, but it’s a strong fit. So overall, I’m very happy.”

For New Orleans, Charlotte, Washington and Utah, the seasons will end Sunday. That might not be soon enough. The Pelicans, Hornets, Wizards and Jazz — all playing out the string of dismal seasons — combined to make the wrong kind of NBA history on Friday night. All four of those teams lost by at least 30 points, marking the fourth time that the league saw four blowouts of that size on the same day. Miami beat New Orleans by 49, 153-104. Boston beat Charlotte by 36, 130-94. Oklahoma City beat Utah by 34, 145-111. And Chicago beat Washington by 30, 119-89.

If you’re here next season in Washington, what do you foresee with this young core? Khris Middleton: I think this team could definitely be a playoff team. I think we had a stretch recently where we were competing against some of the playoff teams in some games, where we won some games and lost some others. I think if you give us a full offseason and give us a full season together, with the improvement of the young core, which is going to be huge, I think they can take a big step because of the way they work, how talented they are, and how smart they are.
