This year is no different. Kawamura knows he can make an impact in this league. And he’ll take any opportunity to prove that point, again and again. “I believe I still can play in the NBA,” Kawamura said after his first NBA Summer League game with the Chicago Bulls. “I want to get a contract — two-way, whatever. I just want to get a contract.”

Yuki Kawamura on Ja Morant: He's the best point guard in the NBA

Yuki Kawamura on learning English: The Grizzlies organization, my teammates, especially Ja Morant, he has been helping me a lot. He’s my big brother, he teaches basketball skills, English… Sometimes bad English, like slang, you know what I’m saying? [laughs] But that’s cool, that’s cool, I love it! Jeremy Lin: How did you and Ja Morant become close? Yuki Kawamura: I don’t know why [laughs] At the first practice at training camp I asked him a lot of questions about basketball skills, English, American culture and so on. I just wanted to learn from him. I believe he’s the best point guard in the NBA right now. He’s my big brother and he’s my mentor.

Speaking in Memphis on Thursday before the Grizzlies faced the Charlotte Hornets in their second of five preseason matches, the former B.League MVP said, "I want to keep making a good impression." In a 119-94 defeat to the Hornets, Kawamura was held scoreless in nine minutes. He shot 0-for-4, including a pair of 3-point misses. Kawamura dished out one assist and had one turnover. Defining how he plays, Kawamura pointed out that he refuses to be lackadaisical. "Whether I play 40 minutes or one minute, nothing changes," Kawamura was quoted as saying by Kyodo News before the game. "Whenever I'm on the court, I play at 100 percent."
