Shams Charania: Whitmore had missed the past few games with shoulder soreness and further testing revealed the blood clot. He joined the Wizards via trade in an increased opportunity and had started working closely with coach Brian Keefe in recent weeks as part of his development plan.

Varun Shankar: Asked Brian Keefe after the game if Cam Whitmore's DNP was because he isn't meeting the Wizards standards — the reasoning Keefe gave after the ATL game. “I’m not gonna discuss this any further after this conversation tonight but we have a deep roster. [Cam is] gonna be back in here in the mix at some point, it always works out this way. We’re seeing different guys — Will Riley, Jamir [Watkins] — those guys stepped up and have been playing well. Just looking at those combinations, nothing more than that.”

As public scrutiny intensifies around Cam Whitmore’s recent “Did Not Play” designation and shrinking role, much of the outside discussion has centered on visible moments — body language, defensive lapses, or shot selection. But those factors are not at the center of the Washington Wizards’ evaluation, multiple sources tell RG. Inside the organization, the concern has been the day-to-day work. Amid a 3-19 start to the season, Washington has emphasized establishing firm practice habits and a consistent approach across its young roster, and Whitmore has not consistently met those expectations. “If you’re trying to establish yourself in the NBA, you need to show up to practice,” one source told RG.

Coach Brian Keefe did not play Cam Whitmore a single second in the Washington Wizards’ 131-116 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night. It seemed like a bewildering decision. Because of injuries, the Wizards were missing Bilal Coulibaly, Khris Middleton, Corey Kispert and Tre Johnson, all of whom are wings, as Whitmore is. Washington entered the game with a 3-18 record. It couldn’t have benefitted from playing Whitmore? What on earth was going on? “We have certain standards that we have for our team,” Keefe said. “He has to live up to those on the better, and he’ll have a chance here. But that’s going to be up to him when that time comes, and he has to meet the standards and expectations that we have for him as a team.”
