Jemele Hill: Rumor said NBA blocked Stephen A. Smith from pregame coverage

Jemele Hill, however, revealed that the issues with LeBron James are not the first time the league office may have gotten involved with Stephen A. Smith’s presence on ESPN’s hoops coverage. “That was the long rumor for a while, that part of the reason that Stephen A. was not more prominent in some of the pregame coverage was because the NBA was blocking that,” Hill said. “That they had particular opinions about him being part of the some of their flagship properties.”

"More Than A Vote is not only about trying to get people in our community to actually go out and vote; it is also giving them the knowledge and the power and the mechanism to know that they can create change," James told VICE. "That's all we hear in the Black community all the time, saying we want change." “We've been lied to for so many years in the Black community, saying that we can't do this and we can't do that because we are so bottom-of-the-barrel,” James continued. “Change starts at the very top when it comes to leadership, but it also is going to continue beyond November going into December and also into 2021.”

Jemele Hill has been selected as the 2018 Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). The annual award recognizes a black journalist who has amassed a distinguished body of work with extraordinary depth, scope and significance to the people of the African Diaspora. Known for her provocative commentary on what’s happening in sports and in the news, Hill is a senior correspondent and columnist for ESPN’s The Undefeated. She uses her platform to address national, social and cultural issues, in addition to sports. Hill nearly broke the internet last year when she criticized President Donald Trump. She also, taking up the NABJ spirit of advocacy, addressed athletes’ rights to take a knee to protest police brutality. She did all this while co-anchoring a groundbreaking rebrand of ESPN’s marquee show SportsCenter, or SC6, along with fellow NABJ member Michael Smith.
