The Jalen Rose Leadership Academy in Detroit will expand after receiving a major donation from Henry Ford Health. The health system has donated its former Kingswood Hospital, a 70,000-square-foot facility in Royal Oak Township, to the charter school.

The announcement came during the 15th annual Jalen Rose Leadership Academy Celebrity Golf Classic at the Detroit Golf Club on Monday. "We get zero state funding, so to have the support of Henry Ford Health and the donation of a facility just allows us to expand what we're doing. It's an incredible undertaking," said Jalen Rose, co-founder of Jalen Rose Leadership Academy and former NBA player.

In a phone interview, Jalen Rose, the academy's cofounder and the retired basketball star, said they are thrilled by Henry Ford Health's incredibly generous gesture, and plan to convert the old hospital building to be a new location for the academy's high school.

Rose told the Free Press that he anticipates growing the academy's high school enrollment to as many as 800 students at the new location, and as many as 400 students could attend the future middle school.

Longtime ESPN NBA studio analyst Jalen Rose will be a guest on TNT’s Inside the NBA Tuesday night, filling in for Kenny Smith. Rose, who was laid off by ESPN in the summer of 2023, has recently taken on a role as an NBC college basketball analyst. During an ESPN tenure that ran 15 years, Rose was a stalwart member of the network’s “NBA Countdown” studio show, the one constant amidst almost annual turnover.
