Anunoby, despite being robbed of an opportunity that some players 15 years his senior never got to experience, remembers that time fondly. He looks back and reflects on all that he learned from his teammates about how to be a pro, how to prepare at the sport’s highest level. The players on that team were so influential on who Anunoby is today that he wanted to list the entire roster, as many as he could recall while put on the spot, to show appreciation for what that experience meant to him as he sat on the sideline and they went to fight on his behalf. “Jeremy Lin was a great teammate,” Anunoby said. “I had Jodie Meeks, Norm Powell, Fred VanVleet, Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka, Kyle Lowry, Kawhi Leonard, Pascal Siakam and Danny Green. I learned a lot from those guys. I learned so much being out.”
Jamahl Mosley’s coaching staff is expected to include Pelicans holdovers Greg Monroe, Jodie Meeks, Mike Hopkins, and Will Bynum, league sources told HoopsHype. Additionally, Dale Osbourne and Bret Brielmaier, who were both a part of Mosley’s assistant coaching staff with the Orlando Magic, are strong candidates to join Mosley in New Orleans, league sources told HoopsHype.
This past season, his Toronto connections led him to play 18 games for Raptors 905 in the NBA G League. Jodie Meeks also played this summer in the Big3, but he says he has “officially retired” from pro ball, making this opportunity a little more special. “I’m young, but in basketball, I’m a little older,” Meeks said matter-of-factly. “I’m no spring chicken anymore. But that’s OK. I can still move, I still feel like I can still play. And obviously I’m out here doing well. So for my career, it’s definitely been a good one and this will be the icing on the cake.”
Meeks’ next hoops adventure will be as an assistant coach with the Birmingham Squadron, the New Orleans Pelicans’ G League affiliate. “Obviously, you want to play as long as possible and then when it’s over, it’s hard to just give it up cold turkey,” Meeks said. “So you want to stay around the game, whether that’s broadcasting or coaching or front office. But I felt like coaching was my calling card because I felt like I have so much to give to the younger generation on just the mental aspect of basketball — shooting, coverages, all those types of things.”

With several games postponed and fewer players available due to the league’s health and safety protocols, 10-year NBA veteran Jodie Meeks hopes to earn a roster spot this season. “I haven’t retired, and I’m not looking to retire,” Meeks told HoopsHype. “I’m still healthy, and I’m only 33. The way my game is, it’s not like I’m super athletic running and jumping like Russell Westbrook. I’m strictly shooting and playing defense. I could still move. I could still play for a while. I just need an opportunity.”
Meeks worked out in Los Angeles at the Mamba Academy with several Brooklyn Nets players in November, including Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, James Harden, and DeAndre Jordan. The former Kentucky Wildcat also trained with Chris Brickley in New York during the fall. “They need to get me in Brooklyn,” Meeks told HoopsHype. “They need some shooting.”
Meeks has still not found an NBA home for the 2019-20 season, though he continues to work out, and is optimistic that he will find his way back into the league, if not sometime this season, then next year. “I would like to be playing right now,” Meeks said. “It’s not in the cards right now, but I’m still working out, I’m still waiting on teams to call. I think it will happen just like last year. It happened later on (in the season). So we’ll see what happens.”
Meeks was met with a unique honor by becoming the first player in Norcross history to have his uniform number (23) retired during a ceremony prior to the current Blue Devils’ game against Tucker in the Hawks-Naismith Holiday Classic on Saturday at the House of Blue. “All the people that were here before me, they were the main people I heard about,” Meeks said following Saturday’s ceremony. “That intrigued me to come here.”
