Tim Reynolds: Heat captain Udonis Haslem, on the Bobby Portis tech incident: "Here's how I started the conversation: 'Bobby, I like you, but..." Why did UD do it? "Protecting my guys. He'd do the same thing for his guys. I just felt like we couldn't allow certain things to keep happening."

Cleveland has reached its limit of 20 players for camp, including former Notre Dame standout Bonzi Colson. Former University of Dayton star and Canton Charge alum Scoochie Smith and Isaac Hamilton, another Charge player from last year, also signed camp deals. Smith and Hamilton each received "exhibit 10 contracts," which means they get a $50,000 bonus if they're waived by the Cavs and signed to the Charge. Real GM first reported their signings.

Inside that modest suburban apartment three years ago, Giannis was a rookie awaiting the arrival of his family to the United States. Visa problems still hadn’t cleared the way for his parents and three younger siblings to leave Greece and come to Wisconsin. He had walked me through his three-bedroom apartment, where he had bedspreads and sheets neatly tucked and prepared on beds for his family’s arrival. He had purchased a PlayStation, but felt such guilt enjoying it without his younger brother Kosta – now a freshman at the University of Dayton – Giannis sold it to a Bucks assistant coach for the $399 he had paid to purchase it.
New Orleans Pelicans point guard Brian Roberts is the greatest free-throw shooter in NBA history. OK, well maybe not officially – Roberts hasn’t attempted enough foul shots to qualify for that distinction. Still, among all players in NBA history who’ve attempted at least 150 free throws in their career, the second-year pro’s percentage of 92.4 is the highest ever. “That’s pretty amazing,” the University of Dayton product said when he was informed of his place atop the all-time list. “Throughout my career in college and overseas, it’s something that’s been pretty consistent for me. I’ve always been in the upper 80s (in percentage), but to be in the mid- to low-90s, I think that’s the best I’ve done.” “First in NBA history? That’s awesome,” said teammate Ryan Anderson, himself an 85.9 percent career foul shooter who made an incredible 95.2 percent this season before being sidelined by injury.
Don “Monk” Meineke, one of the greatest basketball players in University of Dayton history and the NBA’s first rookie of the year, died Tuesday after a lengthy illness. He was 83. Meineke was the cornerstone for coach Tom Blackburn’s program as it gained national acclaim in the early 1950s. He was a two-time All-American and is still the sixth-leading scorer in UD history with 1,866 points.
