With Anthony Davis sidelined because of a hand injury, the belief around the league for weeks has been that the trade deadline will pass without a move. Davis has also made it clear he wants to stay in Dallas. So why is this still coming up? Windhorst: This will largely depend on what Dallas is willing to do with the expected return. In initial talks with teams, the Mavs were looking for a premium, including multiple first-round picks or a prime player, per sources -- textbook stuff when making a star available. There is also the matter of Davis eyeing an extension this summer. There were no takers.
Gilbert Arenas: Every player, if you know you're going to be done within two years, you should start cutting your losses to try to get back to as close as normal as possible, because if you don't have a job right after that, it's all negative income. When we were talking about hard bills, you're talking about light, cars, insurance, baby mamas, right? Paying your folks, paying their house, paying their cars, right? So some of y'all can leave and your hard bills 100,000, 150, 200, 300, hard bills. You remember like when you're playing in the NBA you're collecting bills. Anthony Davis, the house he just sold, $39 million. What you think that water bill is? That light bill, the grass bill, right? He's spending $45,000 probably a month just to upkeep it. Just that house, not the cars in that house, not family, friends, not other houses. So it's the hard bills that get us at the end. And it normally takes an athlete two years to adjust to his new life, because the embarrassment of selling sh*t cuz you don't want people to think you're broke. So you hold on to sh*t that you don't supposed to and going broke. And that happens a lot.

There are some within the organization who would be in favor of trading Anthony Davis even if the return is only expiring contracts, simply because they value the flexibility it would give the franchise as it builds around Flagg. That idea would be hard to sell to Dumont, who feels no pressure to trade Anthony Davis now, sources told ESPN.

League sources say that the Mavericks will continue to welcome any trade interest that surfaces for Davis between now and Thursday's 3 PM ET deadline but feel no pressure to move him and are prepared to proceed with him on the roster beyond the deadline.

Sources have predicted that Toronto will be aggressive, with heaps of long-term money on the books and all of their future picks available to trade, giving them the ability to shed onerous contracts and also add talent to bolster a playoff run. Though Toronto had been seen as a prominent suitor for Anthony Davis, the star forward's injury has likely removed that option. It seems certain that Toronto will shave the roughly $1 million necessary to get out of the luxury tax, but the chance for a big swing might not present itself. "There are only a few teams out there who have full control of their drafts," one veteran East executive said. "That makes [the Raptors] a buyer if they want. But when you look at their contracts [$165 million to their top five players next year], they're going to need those picks."

Anthony Davis was thought to be off the list of top trade candidates because of his wrist injury. But, as ESPN's Shams Charania reported earlier this month, Dallas has renewed talks regarding the 32-year-old forward. That doesn't mean Mavs governor Patrick Dumont and the front office are rushing to deal Davis within the next nine days. "Patrick is not going to sign off on a deal just to do a deal," a source told ESPN's Tim MacMahon. "Ownership doesn't feel any pressure to do an AD deal." If Davis is moved before the deadline, it would follow a recent pattern of "pre-agency," teams trading for injured players now for next season (although Davis could return in time for the playoffs).

Also, a client like Giannis is worth a ton of money to an agent, and so there are always sources suggesting a star and his agent are at odds with each other—the hubbub might create an opening for someone else to move in. And in this case, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports not only has a tendency to talk about Giannis, but also–multiple sources agree–has been talking to Giannis’s brother Thanasis as of late. Rich, it seems clear, would like to represent Giannis, and (despite what’s happening with Anthony Davis in Dallas) is said to have been making the case that he’s the guy who can get a star player where he wants to go.

While Anthony Davis’ market is tepid because of his contract status and injury history, other Mavericks players are drawing interest from rival teams. Mavericks forward Naji Marshall, in particular, is a player in demand. “I think half the league is interested in him,” one scout with a Western Conference team said. The Mavericks are signaling they’d like to hold onto Marshall and that it would take something extraordinary to consider moving the 28-year-old, who is in the midst of a career year.

NBA Courtside: Rich Paul says it’s NOT TRUE that he has demanded the Mavericks to trade Anthony Davis. “I know what was said. That thing was aggregated. This is the power of the internet. If you’re wondering why Rich Paul has a podcast, this is part of the reason why… The reality of it is, that’s fake news. When you have a player that’s on a team, it’s not like you want guys to move for the sake of being moved. If a guy is happy where they are, great. You care about people’s family, you care about the guys well being, and you care if they’re happy. From a business perspective, you want guys to be paid. I really don’t care where the money comes from, the money can come from the 31st team in the NBA for all I care. Long as my guy is in position to get paid, that’s all I want to do… this idea I don’t want a player somewhere, that’s not true” (Via Game Over podcast)

In his courtside report during the Los Angeles Lakers-Dallas Mavericks showdown on Sunday, ESPN's Tim MacMahon revealed that Anthony Davis is currently settled in his situation within the franchise despite his agent Rich Paul's trade demands. "There are trade discussions that his agent Rich Paul has made it clear he thinks it's in AD's best interest to be traded. AD does not necessarily agree, though," MacMahon said. "I have been told he has not been pushing to be moved and is comfortable here in Dallas."

Ron Harrod Jr: Anthony Davis is getting some pregame work ahead of the Mavericks game against the Lakers. Davis, who injured his left hand against the Utah Jazz, is expected to miss about another month. He was wearing some type of protective wrap on the hand while working out with Phil Handy.
