League sources tell The Stein Line that the Mavericks have already committed to converting Nembhard to a standard contract as soon as they can. They don't have the financial wiggle room under the second apron of the league's luxury tax system to do so until early January as their roster stands, but that's not the only challenge Dallas faces.

Over the course of those picks in the 50s, Nembhard concluded that it was better to go undrafted — irrespective of the stigma that comes with being passed over — to ensure he could sign that two-way with Dallas as a free agent. Among the loudest voices at Prime 47 advocating for that route, league sources say, was Andrew Nembhard. The rising Pacer, fresh off helping Indiana reach the NBA Finals for just the second time in franchise history, told Choufani and his brother that he believed going undrafted to ensure he would land in Dallas was Ryan's best NBA pathway.

Mavericks co-interim general manager Matt Riccardi, then in his role as assistant GM, told Nembhard's co-agent Jaafar Choufani as far back as Chicago that they would be trying to acquire a pick so they could draft Nembhard themselves. But Riccardi also assured Choufani early in the process, more than once, that a two-way contract would definitely be waiting for the NCAA assist leader in Dallas if no one drafted him. League sources say it was the only iron-clad promise of a two-way contract that Nembhard received after averaging 10.5 points, 9.8 assists and 1.7 steals for Gonzaga as a senior.
