The Cleveland Charge of the NBA G League have announced the staff that will serve in support of Head Coach Mike Gerrity for the 2022-23 season. Chris Darnell returns as Associate Head Coach and Kendall Chones returns as an Assistant Coach. New additions for 2022-23 include Omar Cook & D.J. Ham as Assistant Coaches, Daniel Gibson as Assistant Coach Program Apprentice/Scout, Willie Williams as Video Coordinator, and Jamie Pasquin as Strength & Conditioning Coach.
Chris Fedor: Former #Cavs sharpshooter Daniel Gibson was at practice today chatting with the coaches. He is going to be working with the Cleveland Charge -- the team's G League affiliate.

The auction includes several LeBron James pieces, topped by a signed game-worn Cleveland Cavaliers jersey, which King James gifted to teammate Daniel Gibson; a 2004 Topps Chrome Superfractor No. 23, graded PSA Gem Mint 10, of which there is but one in existence; and, from 2005, an oversized, autographed Nike “We Are All Witnesses” print of which there were only 25 made.
But hindsight reveals just how badly the Cavs’ roster was broken. It was built for 61 and 66 wins the previous two regular seasons, sure, but not for postseason success. They tried. Lord, they tried. Shaquille O’Neal, Antawn Jamison, Delonte West, a young J.J. Hickson, Shannon Brown, Daniel Gibson, an All-Star season out of Mo Williams … The Cavs tried and they tried and they tried, but they couldn’t put championship pieces around James the first time. The NBA has always been a star-driven league, and the Cavs couldn’t create enough stars before the clock ran out.

Do you think NBA fans or your fans in general have some misconceptions about why you’re not playing in the NBA anymore? ‘Did he fall off the earth? Or did it have something to do with Keyshia Cole?’ What is perception and reality? Daniel Gibson: Man, there are so many misconceptions when it comes to me not playing basketball. The headline I hated to see, and I even contacted them about it, is ‘Daniel Gibson quits the NBA to rap.’ It’s foolish. You can do both. [Portland Trail Blazers guard] Damian Lillard does it. It’s not something you have to completely stop doing to do the other. That bothers me because that time in my life, it was so difficult. Basketball was what I did. I still was writing music and writing short stories at the same time. But basketball was taken away from me.
There was some interest from other NBA teams for you to come back, but would it be fair to say you declined those opportunities due to your injuries? Daniel Gibson: Absolutely. When I stopped playing, I had options to go a few different places to either work out or possibly talk about joining other teams. So, for me it was solely about that point in my career. Would I be happy playing and feeling like I can’t contribute the way that I want to? Or, while I was still young, start to make sure I was lining everything up in my life. Just be real with myself. It was a pretty tough time for me because I was dealing with a lot of other things in my life as well.
How have you held up mentally through all this change? Daniel Gibson: Initially, I probably hit rock bottom in terms of how I felt about myself and where I was in life. Now, I’m at peace with that. Since, I’ve been very vocal about that experience just because anyone else dealing with something mentally due to drama and things happening in their life, I try to be a walking inspiration. Yeah, things happen and come in flurries. You don’t know when they will come, but you bounce back and become stronger from it.
“There was a pretty big misconception of why my career ended so abruptly,” Gibson told DIME. “It seemed like people thought I quit basketball to pursue entertainment and music and that was just not the case.” In fact, it was Gibson’s injuries, to go along with his divorce and the death of his grandmother (whom he lived with) that put him in a mental state unlike anything he’d ever been through.
“I was just hit with a flurry of events,” Gibson says. “Mentally, It just took away my ability to workout. I was suffering from depression and anxiety. Honestly, basketball was my sanctuary, but I couldn’t even do that. […] I really got to the point where being alive wasn’t something I wanted anymore.”

My last year of playing, I was playing through an ankle injury and I tore a tendon in my foot. So going into that free-agency summer, I had surgery but it also happened at a time where I had a divorce going on at the same time. I was just hit with a flurry of events. Mentally, I was out of it and It took away my ability to workout because I was on the shelf for about three months because of the surgery, but just with everything going on, I was out of it. I am talking anxiety, depression, and everything, you name it.
