Nick Nurse is away from the 76ers on Tuesday to attend the funeral services for his brother, Steve, who died unexpectedly last week, the team told The Inquirer and The Athletic. Steve Nurse, 62, died last Wednesday, the day before Game 6 of the Sixers’ first-round series win over the Boston Celtics. Nick Nurse left New York City following his team’s Game 1 loss to the Knicks Monday night to travel to his hometown of Carroll, Iowa, for the services. The coach expects to rejoin the Sixers in New York later Tuesday.

Oh No He Didn't: Nick Nurse: "(VJ) kind of came out of the halftime saying I got (Derrick) White and I'm gonna do better on him because White was cooking. I think White might have had 2 points in the 3rd quarter...and a lot of that was VJ"

Noah Levick: Nick Nurse: Paul George woke up this morning “not feeling well.” “We’re expecting him to give it a shot.”

Austin Krell: Nick Nurse on Kelly Oubre's series: "Listen, he's had a very, very difficult defensive assignment for lots of minutes every game. I think that's kind of where it starts with me. Like, those two guys are great. And they're big and they're skilled. They're in lots of actions, lots of attempts. He's doing a really good job of just digging in and taking the challenge. Lot of minutes and a lot of reps because they got the ball a lot. So, from that standpoint, he's had a great series. I think everything else he can do. If he has a game where he's hitting a few, obviously that's going to help us. I still like, I think he only had one front-of-the-rimmer last night. Had another one he probably should've made, got there, came up short. But I still think he sprinkles in a couple of those, a couple of threes, and he's gonna have great games. But sometimes, some nights it's your night to do that and some nights it's not. But what we do need from him is what he's giving us, to kind of roll up his sleeves and go to work, be solid, play every possession. Even if those guys are rolling, which they seem to do at some point in the game, you just got to kind of short-memory it and have them get right back to work."

Ky Carlin: #Sixers coach Nick Nurse on what unlocked for Joel Embiid: “It was a little similar to the other night that obviously he was getting some good looks, and a lot of them were just going in and out…I was sitting there thinking, he's not far away here from finding some rhythm.”

The Sixers’ Nick Nurse is widely believed to be under pressure too, meaning Sunday’s loss to Boston, which put them in a 3-1 hole, qualifies as a step in the wrong direction. The same can be said for Cleveland’s Kenny Atkinson, whose Cavs did the James Harden deal in February with the expectation that they would return to title-contender status but who, after falling 93-89 to Toronto on Sunday, are now tied 2-2 with the Raptors. Game 5 is in Cleveland on Wednesday.

Derek Bodner: Nurse was asked whether the key to Game 5 was tactical adjustments, or just playing better? "The tactical stuff isn't going to mean anything if we're not going to play with better energy, toughness, guarding, rebounding. You don't even know if your schemes and what you're trying to do is working."

Like, you don't even know if your schemes and what you're trying to do is working. So that has to take up a good portion of what we're doing." - Nurse on Game 5

Adam Aaronson: Nick Nurse: Joel Embiid “just not ready yet.” Says he’s done lifting and a decent bit of on-court work. “Pretty intense playing” is how he described it. Both with players and coaches.

Gina Mizell: Nick Nurse said we could know more about Joel Embiid's status/progress later today, and described mood as "hopeful": "He wants to play, and we want him to play. I don’t know how close we are to that at this point, but I think there’s some progress being made and let’s hope it keeps going that way."

Adam Aaronson: Nick Nurse says the Sixers didn’t do a ton on the court today, just went through a few things. Compared it to a walkthrough. Did not elaborate as to what Joel Embiid’s participation included.

Noah Levick: Nick Nurse said the Sixers know they won’t have Joel Embiid (appendectomy recovery) for Game 1 against the Celtics on Sunday. Nurse said he’s focused on that game, didn’t have anything on whether Embiid might return later in the series.
