Fizdale has tried rookie Wade Baldwin IV, Andrew Harrison and Allen at backup point guard throughout the season. But Douglas, who is on his second 10-day contract in Memphis, appears to be the keeper at the position. Barring a potential trade, indications are the Grizzlies intend to sign Douglas for the rest of the season once his current 10-day deal expires next week.
“For this team, right now, we felt like we needed more stability and security at that position,” Fizdale said, later adding: “Toney Douglas is a guy that these guys trust. They saw that he really fit us from a toughness standpoint, stability standpoint and his ability to make a three.”
“It’s not like they didn’t want to keep me. It’s just that the business side took over because I was on the injury exception,” said Douglas, who has done two-a-day workouts since leaving Memphis. “At the end of the day, I’m here and looking forward to helping this team win games. This is a playoff team. In the playoffs, you need experience. I feel like I can make a difference.”
