The only semblance of flair came at the 2001 All-Star Weekend, when he laced up the vibrant yellow hued “Sunshine” pair. With a time crunch in store, the team got moving. “We turned a sample pretty quickly, and it wasn’t vibrant enough,” details Fulton. “We did it one more time, and I think it all came together within three or four weeks. It wasn’t a long process.” Only 30 pairs were made – all in Kobe’s size 14 – with Bryant receiving six pairs himself, and the rest going to brand execs and employees. He went on to drop 29 points in 42 minutes in that opening night game, and wore them one more time for a 28 point outing on Nov. 11 – Veteran’s Day – when facing off against fellow Adidas headliner and top-class scorer Tracy McGrady.

Now theres also periods in the season where players can wear color palettes that don’t match the uniform. Where did that originate from? I believe that was in 2012. We had specific requests come through. Sometimes it was from a footwear company or sometimes a player via the team’s equipment manager. This came at time when customizing shoes online through adidas or Nike and other footwear manufacturers became possible. Many of the players have a pretty keen fashion sense, and they wanted to be more specific about their sneakers. It also was a time where we started to line ourselves up with certain events as well. So we have Fit Week, Green Week, Veteran's Day, or Hoops for Troops, or other celebrations where we’d issue the teams specific warm-ups, special shooting shirts, headbands. So we started to connect the dots and say, ‘How can we complete this package?’ We should allow the footwear companies some opportunities here with our teams and players to design footwear that aligns with that.
So if anyone could identify the cause of Garnett’s rough start this season, it’s his longtime pal. On Monday, Pierce said he thinks Garnett still will need more time to get used to his new surroundings. “I think he’s still trying to make the adjustment,” Pierce said after the Nets practiced at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn as part of spending their Veterans Day with the troops there. “Kevin’s been one that’s always … he’s always been a guy that needed to feel comfortable, who needed to make an adjustment, the familiarity. And I think he’s still getting familiar with the offense and understanding where his shots are going to come from, the minutes played adjustment. “Even over the past four or five years, it’s been an adjustment each and every year. Even on the Celtics, because the older he’s gotten his minutes have gone down and he’s been asked to do less. … He’s going to find his rhythm eventually and really find his groove.”

Kenny Smith said Thursday night he is in the process of organizing a charity game in Las Vegas and wants it to benefit military members. It will be played on Veteran's Day, Friday Nov. 11. That's the day before Manny Pacquiao is scheduled for a welterweight title fight in Las Vegas against Juan Manuel Marquez, which could make it a huge sports weekend in Sin City. The beneficiaries will be former military members, which is fitting because the game will be played on Veterans Day.
Many details must be worked out, but Smith said he has already been in touch with numerous players and the response has been excellent. And having the event benefit veterans would make it an instant success with sponsors. "I told them I'd do it, but I want to bring the charity aspect into it,'' Smith said while speaking at the SMU basketball tipoff gala. "If I know there's a long lockout, I want to do it on Veterans Day and give them money to the veterans. It's got to be not only for the fans, but also for the soldiers. "That's the only way it makes sense. You can't do it for a money grab. You have to do it for something that's really worthwhile.''
