Isaiah Thomas, at 35 years old, is not ready to ride off into the sunset just yet. “I just enjoy the process, but I know what I’m fighting against,” Thomas said in August during a lull at his Ninth Annual ZekeEnd Tournament in Tacoma, Washington, where he was joined by Pritchard, Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero, Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson and other NBA luminaries.

Isaiah describes the Tacoma basketball scene as “gritty” and “competitive,” and it is. Still, the Sonics’ departure in 2008 left an unmistakable hole in the culture. “It hurt the city in a big way, just because the Sonics were a big part of the community,” he laments. “Basketball was a big part of what was going on in the Tacoma-Seattle area. I think it hit big, and then now it’s just, like, forgotten. Not for the most part, but it’s just the norm that we don’t have a team.”

These are the moments Thomas has wanted, what he has craved. The unheralded, twice-traded kid from Tacoma, Wash., has worked himself into a two-time All-Star, a viable MVP candidate, yet these are the games he has longed for. “I always dreamed of moments like this,” Thomas said. “Winning playoff series, winning playoff games. Close games, overtime games in the playoffs. Because those are where legends are born. And one day I want to be one of those guys.

Boston Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas is expected to travel home to Tacoma, Washington, after Friday's Game 6 against the Chicago Bulls to attend his sister's funeral, a source told ESPN on Thursday, confirming a Boston Globe report. Chyna Thomas died following a single-vehicle accident April 15. As family and friends gathered Thursday for the first of two nights of viewing, Thomas traveled with the Celtics to Chicago, where he's expected to play in Friday's Game 6.
After the Celtics and Bulls play Game 6 at the United Center on Friday night, Thomas is scheduled to fly to Tacoma to attend his sister’s funeral at noon on Saturday. If the Celtics win Game 6, this series will be over. But if Chicago wins, Game 7 will be played in Boston at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
"His plan, as of right now -- and, again, subject to him changing if he wants -- is that he'll be here [Tuesday] night and then will go to Tacoma after," Stevens said. "So either after the game [Tuesday] night or Wednesday morning." The Celtics have two days off before Friday's Game 3 against the Bulls in Chicago.
Reached at his home in Tacoma last night, Thomas’ father, James, said the Celtics guard still hadn’t made a decision about when to fly home. “It’s a crucial time for our family right now,” said the elder Thomas. Celtics coach Brad Stevens was one of the first visitors to Thomas’ home. It was unclear if that plan involved flying home and missing tomorrow’s game. But according to the source, Thomas was “in a state of shock.”
