The Czech Republic is preparing to begin its EuroBasket 2025 campaign, but today the team suffered a major setback: Tomas Satoransky, the star of the squad, will miss the competition due to injury. The announcement came directly from the player himself through a post on his social media channels. Satoransky said: “I had to make a very difficult decision today. Those who know me understand what it means for me to play for the national team and how much I wanted to take part in my fifth European Championship in national colors. However, due to my current health condition, I cannot help the guys the way I would like and as expected of me. Therefore, I must apologize for withdrawing. Simply put, my back has stopped me, just like the young boy in the picture.
The Czech national team has announced its preliminary roster for EuroBasket 2025. The roster is headlined by their only NBA player, Atlanta Hawks guard Vit Krejci, and Barcelona’s Tomas Satoransky.
So Eurobasket is already in your mind? The Czech team is changing a lot and obviously they will rely on you a lot. "It will be something new again. I'm looking forward to this challenge. It's good to be with the guys we play with on the national team. It's been rebuilt a little bit, we have a new coach and Tomas Satoransky will be there at the same time, who helped me as a mentor when I went to the NBA. Actually, all the coaches in Atlanta were happy that I'll be playing in Eurobasket, that I'm counted on. They believe that it will move me on again if I have a more important role. And I already know that some coaches will come to Riga to see me."
What creates this tight-knit community among European players, even beyond their active playing days? Marcin Gortat: We have similar cultures. That shows who we are; we have the same values, culture, and jokes, and we can spot the same issue or situation in a room. For example, you have one of the guys walking into the locker room with a golden grill and shiny diamonds, and he steps in, smiling all over the place. Everybody else thinks it is normal. Then all of a sudden me, Jan Vesely, or Tomáš Satoranský, “We’re sitting here looking at this like, what is this? This guy looks like a clown. He's wearing gold diamond teeth. It's ridiculous.” Next, you see an African-American coach walking in with his super baggy clothes. I'm talking about a potato bag hanging on him as a suit, and we're looking at him, like, "What the hell is this?" We all crack jokes, like “You could make three suits out of this material; why would you make this suit? You look like an idiot in this suit.” So, we see those differences. We, as European guys, can spot a lot of things the same way. And we can catch a lot of things the same way we speak about when Americans talk about Sunday football, weekend Premier League games, or Barcelona-Real Madrid games, so we just have a different culture and different values and different things that are interesting for us.
Would you say this is the worst thing about the NBA? Tomas Satoransky: “I think that’s the hardest thing. The truth is that it is a business, something that I never wanted to accept in this sense and confirm it. You always had a passion for basketball, it’s clear that they pay us a lot of money but sometimes it’s too much business and that makes it difficult to build chemistry in the team, which is very important and Spain showed it in the Eurobasket. It is the most difficult especially when you have small children, it has to be really tough for some players”.

We’ve talked a lot about the bad side of the NBA but it also has good things, obviously. For you, what is the best thing about being there? Tomas Satoransky: “To be able to say that you are an NBA player [laughs]. That already gives you a lot of respect in many places. That happened to me in my country, nobody followed basketball very much but if they know that you are from the NBA they already look at you differently and give you more importance. And compete against the best players in the best stadiums and have fans all over the world. But then the time comes and you have to decide… It was very nice and I wanted to fulfill my dream… but that’s it [laughs]”.
EuroBasket: Tomas Satoransky dished out 17 assists against Greece, the most by any player in a #EuroBasket game since FIBA started collecting this data, back in 1995.
The Czech Republic and Tomas Satoransky will wait until the last second, hoping that the leader of the Czech national team will be able to play in Eurobasket 2022 in front of his home crowd. As Michal Sob, the national team manager said to the local press: “It’s a matter still in question. However, rehabilitation is going in the right direction”.
The final decision will be made on Wednesday evening and will be announced on Thursday afternoon when the Czech national team has to present its official roster to FIBA. There’s also the scenario that Satoransky will be part of the roster, even if he misses the start of the tournament. As Sob admitted: “We made his house like the Chicago Hope hospital. He has been in a positive mood and he believes that he will be able to return”.
Despite the reports about Tomas Satoransky missing the Eurobasket, things are quite different at the moment. The MRI exam showed that the star of the Czech national team suffered a severe sprain in his right ankle and he is trying to be back on time for the Eurobasket tipoff.

Even if he can’t be ready for the first game of his team on the 2nd of September against Poland, he is expected to be part of the final roster in hopes that he can play later in a tournament which is considered the pinnacle for his generation of Czech players and it’s partly hosted on his home country.
The Czech Republic national team's leader Tomas Satoransky is going to miss the upcoming EuroBasket, according to israelhayom.co.il report. The point guard has suffered an injury in a friendly game against the German national team in Hamburg. Satoransky underwent an X-ray which showed that he did not suffer a fracture, according to Czech reporter Jakub Kanta.
German NBA duo of Franz Wagner and Dennis Schroder combined for 42 points and guided their country to a high-scoring victory over the Czech Republic. The loss was not the only issue for the Czech Republic, as Tomas Satoransky suffered a right ankle injury.
