“Everyone gravitates toward him,” Caldwell-Pope says. “AG was a great example as far as the younger players … [letting] them know, ‘Just be patient. Your time is coming. You never know what can happen. Just be ready.’” That mindset has been especially important on a team with two franchise cornerstones in Jokić and Murray. “All his teammates respect him,” says Elise Gordon, his older sister. “He’s always willing to share knowledge without judgment.”

Caldwell-Pope admires how Gordon carried so much inside but didn’t let it affect his play on the floor. He was still going to show up, full effort, every possession, even helping the team to a second-place finish in the West before falling in the Western Conference semifinals in seven games in 2023-24. “He didn’t bring his grief to the locker room,” Caldwell-Pope says. “When he came to work, it was all about work. And when he left, you knew it was all about his family.” Gordon began to come to terms with what had happened. “Accept a reality for what it is,” Gordon says. He turned to his books, particularly on the subjects he’s passionate about, including metaphysics and astrophysics. These disciplines contemplate existence beyond the world we commonly know.

Grizzlies PR: Status Update: Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Jaylen Wells are available tonight against the Lakers. Olivier-Maxence Prosper and Javon Small (Two-Way Transfers) are out.

Q. Was Kentavious Caldwell-Pope really playing on work release from jail? Was that like a real thing? Like that was that a real thing? Larry Nance Jr: KCP is our guy. Look, KCP, we love him. We love him. That was real. That was real. That was real. That ain't my story to tell, but like it was … I forgot about that, actually. I forgot about that until this very second.

Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. both had inefficient offensive nights. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Jaylen Wells didn't offer much help on the offensive end. Against a team like the Houston Rockets, that won't be enough. The Grizzlies fell behind early and lost 124-109 at FedExForum. Morant finished with 17 points on 6-for-19 shooting. Jackson scored nine points on 2-for-6 shooting. Cam Spencer led the Grizzlies (3-6) with 19 points.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope: I mean, Memphis is safe, man. Like ever since I got traded, that’s all I was hearing before, but it’s been the total opposite of what I’ve actually experienced now. You know what I’m saying? It’s been the total opposite. Like, the condo I’m in — it’s nice. It’s one of the newest ones they just built out there. I’m downtown, about 7 minutes from the arena. I’ve got places I can go out, eat, hang out — it’s cool. It’s real cool.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope: And honestly, over the last seven years I’ve been in the league, I’ve been betting on myself. I know what I can give. I know what I bring to the table. And I know what I’m going to do — first of all. I always tell myself, man — every year, 30 to 60 new kids are coming in. I’m 32 years old. Ain’t nobody going to take my job, man. I got five kids to feed.
