A lot has changed around the Grizzlies and with Morant in that time — in particular, the absence of Jaren Jackson Jr., who was part of an eight-player deal on Feb. 3 that sent him to the Utah Jazz. Morant called the trade deadline "difficult." "I wasn't a fan of it, but it's a business, so, like I told him, he's been a pro for eight years now, so continue to be that," Morant said March 7 ahead of the Grizzlies' game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Grizzlies general manager Zach Kleiman said the team is pivoting to a younger build, but Morant still believes he can be happy in Memphis. "Why can't I be? I've been happy this whole time," Morant said. Even though Morant stated that he hopes to be back in Memphis, the situation remains uncertain. He was asked if he believes he'll be on the team next season. "I hope so," Morant said. "You would know more than me. The internet is right there. Everything you're asking me has been on the internet."

The team said that Morant is continuing to experience discomfort in the elbow. Morant went into detail about the injury, specifically stated that the discomfort is coming on crossbody passes. "If I was basically whipping a pass to the opposite side with that hand is the biggest problem," Morant said. "Other than that, I feel like I can fight through it, but also still have to be smart."
Ex-Knicks coach David Fizdale says team brass told him to tank during the 2018-19 season to try to get Zion Williamson or Ja Morant, while assuring him that Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were coming to the Knicks the following summer. The Knicks went 17-65 that season with a roster that featured Tim Hardaway Jr. and Enes Kanter. “The plan that we came up with, I was all in on that, and I was like this is the deal and this is the way to go about it. It just didn’t come to fruition,” Fizdale said in an interview with @RunItBackFDTV. “...Losing all them damn games, donating my record to get Zion Williamson or Ja.”

The only case in the Florida complaint related to Tennessee was a burglary from December 2024 in which approximately $1 million in jewelry, watches and luxury bags were stolen from the home of "Professional Athlete 6," a Memphis Grizzlies player, while the Grizzlies played the Golden State Warriors on Dec. 19. ESPN's Tim MacMahon later confirmed the player was guard Ja Morant. Huaiquil Chavez will be sentenced June 11. As part of the plea agreement, both sides agreed to two years imprisonment. If the court rejects the plea, either side can withdraw. United States attorneys recommended that Chavez receive "the maximum applicable reduction for acceptance of responsibility" provided he complies with the plea agreement's stipulations. Those include not committing any new crimes or purposely making false statements or testifying "falsely at any future proceedings."

Sources say Sacramento only ever showed modest interest. I'm told Miami, too, only inquired about Morant with the idea of acquiring him in a deal similar to Washington's asset-light acquisition of Trae Young. And the Heat, sources say, were not actively pursuing Morant in the days leading up to the deadline because Antetokounmpo had become their primary target.

One scenario that has to be filed away — for all the justified questions about fit — is the prospect of Milwaukee trading for Morant. Numerous teams came away from the deadline believing that the Bucks' interest in Morant was genuine ... whether that was to install him as their eventual successor to Antetokounmpo as Face of the Franchise or because they believe they could actually make a Giannis-and-Ja pairing work.

People outside that don't know Ja Morant have a certain way of thinking about him. Being around him day to day, what have you learned the most with him? Cedric Coward: Yeah, it depends what people think about him. If you want to say all the negative connotations about him, you're dead wrong and you need to keep your thoughts to yourself. Ja is one of the best people I've ever met. One of the best people to be around. He's the same way, goofy - we quote movies all the time. I mean, he's always cracking jokes.

Cedric Coward: What people portray him to be is not what he is. He'll take care of you in terms of like, when we had the ice storm, he offered to buy my groceries, just little things like that he doesn't have to do, but he does out of the kindness of his own heart and just taking care of people, just because that's who he is. That's like his nature. And then at the same time, he's just a great person to be around. Like I tell people all the time, he's one of the people I'd bring to my cookout, you know, and you'd be like, "Hey man, come on through." You know what I'm saying? And everybody would love him.

Ja Morant: 🙏🏾 @jarenjacksonjr. Chris Haynes: BREAKING: Utah Jazz star Jaren Jackson Jr. is likely to miss the remainder of the season to undergo surgery on his left knee to ensure his longterm health after a localized PVNS growth was discovered post trade, league sources tell me.

The Grizzlies are widely expected to trade Morant this upcoming offseason, league sources told ClutchPoints. Memphis pushed hard to trade Morant at the trade deadline, but maintained that they wouldn't accept a package similar to that of the Wizards' for Trae Young.

Ja Morant expected to be traded by the February trade deadline, and the fact that he wasn't came as a bit of a surprise to him, sources said. Teams not making significant offers came as a wake-up call for Morant, who is determined to work his way back from his elbow injury and prove to teams in the NBA that he's worth trading for.
