But considering the superstar guard's staggering value he may get for next year, Brian Windhorst of ESPN suggested that everyone should not be shocked if Mitchell ultimately passes on what he can get this summer. "I think the Cavs and Donovan are in a very good place, and I think everybody should be prepared the eventuality that he does not extend [this year]," Windhorst said on ESPN Cleveland. "He is in maximum control, maximum benefit, maximum choice, maximum leverage situation. "He has one year left on his contract and next year, he can sign with all of those goodies to come along with a brand new contract because it's a 10-year veteran. And if something goes wrong in this year, he has a player option that can protect him for the year after."

Eligible for a contract extension on July 7, Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell is highly coveted by the organization. With one year and a player option left on his current deal, Cavs president Koby Altman was asked about his status and a potential agreement, whether this summer or next offseason. “Donovan has been steadfast in how much he loves it here, and so there hasn't been any question of will he be here and does he want to be here,” Altman said. “So I think that's the biggest thing, right? That's the best thing, when we have a superstar of his caliber that wants to be in Cleveland, that's our best ambassador, that's our best recruiter. “There's guys that are here that wouldn't be here without him, quite frankly. So I think the bigger question is the one that's been answered is does he want to be here, and does he want to be here long term? And I think he's answered that.”

Donovan Mitchell: I feel like this [contract extension talk] has been a consistent theme every single season I’ve been here. And I thought it would go away once I signed the first extension, but here we are. I said it [Monday night]: “I love it here.” I see growth. I see a runway. I believe. I’ve made Cleveland home outside of just basketball. I don’t want to go. I don’t really know how else to blatantly say it to people for them to believe me. If they don’t believe me, then hey, who cares? I don’t care. The organization knows and everybody in the building knows and feels the way I feel. I’ve been saying this since I first got to Cleveland. I was called [out], “Oh, he’s lying.” I was about to sign my extension three years ago, “Oh, he’s lying.” Signed it. They’re like, “Oh, [he’s] not signing the long term.” Whatever. There’s always going to be something, I guess. So, Cleveland, you know how I feel. This is just for everybody else.

Donovan Mitchell: We don’t get to the conference finals without James Harden. We tried. I don’t know how else to put it, but we live in a world where it’s just so much easier to knock and hate. And pretty sure they’re going to hate me. They’re going to hate [Evan Mobley], they hate [head coach] Kenny [Atkinson]. They’re going to hate everybody, right? So, this right here isn’t me saying, “Don’t hate us.”

“When I woke up this morning, there is no easy way. … It was just like, ‘Damn, it’s over with,’ ” Mitchell told Andscape from the Cavaliers’ practice facility late Tuesday morning. “You just wake up like, ‘Damn, what am I doing? What do you do now?’ You just feel clueless, but not about just the loss. Being swept is always tough. It’s embarrassing, nasty. But it just gets you ready for 19 weeks from now. “It was a very painful ending. To go out like that, you try to put on a smile and try to move past it. It’ll take a little bit. The worst part about it is just the sweep. We had an opportunity, right? It was right there. I’m saying we go ahead and win the series. Whatever happens, happens. But when you have an opportunity, man, and you watch it go past, that’s killer. And at the end with the 35-, whatever it was, point loss. That s‑‑‑, I don’t really know how else to describe it. But that’s one of the things. It don’t matter all the success we’ve had. Yeah, it’s great. But when you lose like that, it’s tough.”

Channing Frye: "You know the difference between Jalen Brunson and Donovan Mitchell is Brunson is a true number one. I do not think Donovan Mitchell is a true number one take you to the NBA Finals person. Do I think he is a great player? Yes. I think he is a two also. You have to bring a one in there, a real one."

There were rumbles during the regular season that Cleveland would have interest in pursuing Quin Snyder — Donovan Mitchell's former coach in Utah — in the event of a coaching change there, but sources with knowledge of the Cavaliers' thinking have pushed back on such suggestions, insisting that Kenny Atkinson was always destined to retain his job for a third season.

Cavs All-Star Donovan Mitchell will be eligible to sign a contract extension on July 7. Asked whether the Cavs will offer an extension to Mitchell this summer, Koby Altman said, "There hasn't been any question on if he wants to be here or if he will be here." When asked why he considers Mitchell an elite No. 1 player, Altman said, "Donovan is uniquely ours and he's our guy. When you are constantly an All-NBA guy ... you embrace that." "Do we think we can win a championship with him as our best player? Yes," he said.

Oh No He Didn't: Windy on the Cavs roster: "I expect them to make some significant changes to it. I expect the Cavs to be mulling over...like I don't think it will be long before you start to hear Cavs attached to Giannis...would they consider entering that market? If they put Evan Mobley on the table...they drafted him to be another Giannis. What if they could turn him into Giannis with Harden and Donovan Mitchell on the roster"
