A West Michigan high school is hiring a former Piston to lead their basketball program. Hunter, who has worked with the program previously, brings plenty of experience to the high school basketball level.

Detroit clinched postseason berths three times in that five-year run in teal and maroon, notably worn by Grant Hill, Jerry Stackhouse, Joe Dumars and Ben Wallace. “I think it’s great that people remember some things that we did in that era,” said Stackhouse, whom the Pistons acquired in a trade from the Philadelphia 76ers in 1997. “It wasn’t the glory days. It wasn’t the Bad Boys. It wasn’t the ’04 championship team, but in between that, you had Grant Hill, you had myself, you had Lindsey Hunter and Allan Houston. Terry Mills. You had guys that contributed to taking some ingredients from those Bad Boys.”

Once notified that he’d done this in full view of other reporters, to a guy holding a hot mic, Hunter’s tack changed markedly. The night the Warriors were eliminated in Game 7 by the Clippers, Hunter approached me outside the locker room, this time with smiles and an apologetic tone. “I was just joking!” he said, unconvincingly.

A Black basketball operations staffer told ESPN he has heard Sarver say the N-word multiple times. Sarver once used the N-word when trying to explain to a staffer why he preferred hiring Lindsey Hunter over Dan Majerle as head coach in 2013, according to a high-level executive who heard the remark. Hunter was a first-year Suns player development coordinator while Majerle was in his fifth year as a Suns associate head coach. "These [N-words] need a [N-word]," Sarver told the staffer of his largely Black team, according to the executive.

The following year, at 32, McKinney landed his first general manager job with the expansion Timberwolves, and in 1992 he accepted the unenviable task of breaking up the aging “Bad Boys” in Detroit. McKinney traded John Salley and Dennis Rodman but also drafted Lindsey Hunter and Allan Houston. He wept tears of joy when he landed future Hall of Famer Grant Hill with the third pick of the 1994 draft. When the franchise predictably struggled during its rebuild, McKinney took the hits — sometimes literally. During a practice in 1993, guard Alvin Robertson choked McKinney after being fined and suspended for skipping games, practices and rehab sessions.

Lindsey Hunter had the title of Phoenix Suns’ interim coach for three months in 2013 but the actual job was done more often than not by assistant coach Igor Kokoskov. “Lindsey wasn’t ready for that role,” said Phoenix forward Jared Dudley, who was in his fourth season with the Suns in 2013. “During timeouts Igor was the one drawing up plays.”

Lindsey Hunter is remembered for his contributions to "Deee-troit Basketball" during the previous couple decades, including the Pistons' most recent NBA championship in 2004. Turns out, that wasn't the last time "Deee-troit" will be hearing from him. Per the Detroit Sports 105.1 website, Hunter will join program director Dave Shore in the drive-time slot for the Hunter & Shore show starting today. The show will run from 2-6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays on WMGC-FM. Hunter and Shore take over the time slot previously held by Matt Dery and Drew Sharp and their Dery & Sharp show.
