Egor Demin, as he does often, took notes while speaking with the Hall of Famer, who also happens to be the favorite player of Dëmin’s father, Vladimir, who played basketball professionally in Russia. “When my dad saw the video of me talking to [Vince Carter], he was crying [and said], ‘Man, that guy changed the game,’ ” Dëmin said before scoring 12 points in the Nets’ 113-99 blowout loss to the Celtics at Barclays Center on Tuesday night. “Everybody obviously talks about Steph [Curry], LeBron [James] and Michael [Jordan],’’ Dëmin said. “But he was like, ‘People like Vince, they really changed the game in their own way.’ That’s special to me, knowing how much that means to my dad. I kind of accomplished my dad’s dreams right now through my own experience.”
The president and chief executive officer of CSKA, Andrey Vatutin, posted a column on the Russian outlet, Sport Express. “Anyone expecting this to be a de facto NBA expansion was sorely mistaken,” he described the developments in the partnership between FIBA and the NBA, widely labeled as NBA Europe, “European clubs will not play games against the Lakers, Celtics, or Knicks, they will not participate in the draft, and Nikola Jokic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will not be making regular visits to our side of the Atlantic.”
“The NBA’s plans in Europe essentially look like an attempt to steal a rapidly growing business,” stressed the 52-year-old executive. “After all, about ten years ago, the EuroLeague had virtually no market value, but now the brand is valued at more than €1 billion—we realized this during recent negotiations with potential investors. And the league has a real strategy that will triple these figures in the next five years.”

Egor Demin is on the verge of becoming the first Russian-born player drafted by an NBA team since … Sergey Karasev in 2013. “Well, that means a lot,” Demin told The Athletic. “Obviously, everybody knows about Andrei Kirilenko, the legend of Russian basketball. A lot more Russian legends that got to the NBA, and even though maybe they didn’t spend as much time in the NBA as they wanted to, they had great careers back in Russia in EuroLeague and became legends. And I was growing up looking up to Alexey Shved, playing in Khimki, and he was in the NBA, too. “So for me, all these players are a huge example and learning resource.”
