John Collins: I still enjoy a coffee every now and then, but most of the time we got mate. This is the gourd, and this is called a bombilla. Obviously, I’ve got the leaves inside in here. It’s a Uruguayan, Argentinian, Paraguayan… I don’t want to offend, I don’t know who created it—but it’s a South American tea. You sort of refill it over the course of the day. Helps me with energy, and I cramp a lot—coffee makes me cramp. So I was trying to find a different alternative."

Since some of those qualifying games fall during the NBA season, Boylen coached a team mainly of G League players against teams from FIBA Americas: Uruguay, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Columbia. Coaching in the 50-year-old Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is nothing like coaching the Bulls in the United Center on a Saturday night. So what. “The competitive part of it," Boylen explained, "was exactly what I needed at that point in my life."

Team USA qualifies for 2023 FIBA World Cup

Team USA beat Uruguay 88-77 in men’s basketball Thursday to qualify for the 2023 FIBA World Cup in the Philippines. The Americans will vie for their record sixth World Cup championship and seek to qualify for the 2024 Olympics, beginning Aug. 25 in Manila. The national team will be stocked with NBA talent by new managing director Grant Hill and coached by Steve Kerr. But that’s not the group that did the qualifying. Over the last 451 days, Team USA has been coached by former Bulls coach Jim Boylen, with 52 players – mostly from the G League and former NBA players – wearing red, white and blue.
