For the past two seasons, Warrick dabbled in coaching as an assistant for the G League Ignite. He will be based in Washington D.C. and will evaluate talent on the east coast, according to the report.
Iowa Wolves forward Hakim Warrick has a cousin who works as a lawyer and a friend who works on Wall Street. They tell him the same thing. “Whenever I had a thought about retiring, they say, ‘Keep riding until the wheels fall off because it’s a struggle out there in the real world,’” Warrick said. “For me to be able to do something that I love and doing it this long, it’s just great.”
Warrick, 36, hasn’t played in the NBA since the 2012-13 season, but he’s attempting a comeback in the G League with the Wolves, for whom he’s played 18 games this season. He started for Iowa in a 113-106 victory over the Westchester Knicks on Wednesday at the league’s Winter Showcase at Mandalay Bay Convention Center and is averaging 10.3 points and 5.1 rebounds. “It seemed like the best way to get back. I’ve been contemplating getting back the last couple years, just never did it,” Warrick said of playing in the G League. “This year I put my name in the pool. It’s been a lot better than I expected it to be.”

By professional basketball standards, Warrick, who was the No. 19 pick of the Memphis Grizzlies in 2005, is old. In fact, when he was taken with the No. 9 pick in last month's G League Draft by the Delaware 87ers, he became the oldest player ever drafted into the G League. He's now a member of the Iowa Wolves, the Minnesota Timberwolves affiliate. As he attempts to get back into the NBA after several years as a basketball globetrotter, the 6-foot-9 Warrick said he felt the G League -- where the average salary is just $35,000 -- was his best option. "I've been pretty much everywhere and I just never tried [the G League], and I just wanted to at least try it before I was done playing," Warrick said.

Sydney Kings import Josh Childress is also a former teammate of Warrick, with the two Americans playing together with the Phoenix Suns from 2010 to 2012. “Josh helped me a lot, like I said, he was actually trying to get me out last year and he told me what to expect.” said Warrick. “He really helped me transition for a guy coming in from the same situation as him: an NBA guy coming over for the first time. So it’s good to have a guy who’s gone through what you’re about to go through.
