League sources scouting the Lakers in the preseason debut in Palm Desert left impressed with how Reaves held up as the primary offensive option. More of that in the non-Dončić minutes is suddenly even more critical.

The Lakers didn’t move Knecht this summer, with anything the team possibly able to get for Knecht not worth giving up on the potential that’s still there. But after a rough preseason debut where he shot 1 of 12, scouts left Palm Desert as pessimistic as ever, one even calling Knecht a “negative asset,” meaning the Lakers would need to attach pieces to incentivize a team in a trade.

Jalen Green didn't play in the preseason opener on Friday, Oct. 3, against the Los Angeles Lakers in Palm Desert, but got in a pregame workout of dribbling, shooting and movement. The former Houston Rockets guard played in all 82 regular-season games the past two seasons. The Suns landed Green in the Kevin Durant trade before the 2025 draft. “I think he’s super close (to returning),” Suns guard Jared Butler said. The Suns leave Phoenix for what they say will be a 17-hour, 7,500-mile flight to China for a weeklong stay that ends with two games in three days — Oct. 10 and Oct. 12 — versus the Nets. “Get out of the states," Suns star Devin Booker said Oct. 3. “Long flight together, so we're going to get some good team bonding. Some quality time. Take this show on the road.”
Head coach Jordan Ott spoke a handful of times throughout training camp on Williams, and the central takeaways are that while Williams does not have a current injury, he is not doing 5-on-5 yet and will not play in the preseason opener on Friday in Palm Desert against the Lakers. “We know Mark’s history and we’re trying to change it,” Ott said Saturday. “We’re taking an approach. And he’s been out here, and it’s been good. He’s definitely added some strength to him. … Excited to see where he goes but we still do have another couple of weeks here.”

The Phoenix Suns will play the Los Angeles Lakers twice this preseason, with the latter game scheduled for Oct. 17 at PHX Arena, league sources informed The Arizona Republic. The Suns face the Lakers in the Palm Springs, California, area on Oct. 3. Phoenix has played Los Angeles at Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert, California, the past two seasons. It’s a home game for the Lakers. The Suns and Lakers played twice last preseason as well, with the second game in Phoenix.

The Los Angeles Lakers hosted the Phoenix Suns on Sunday night in the second of their two preseason games at Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert. The Lakers will play a total of six preseason games. This one marked the debuts of LeBron James and Anthony Davis, giving the Lakers their full starting lineup for the first time. The Suns also had their full lineup available outside of center Jusuf Nurkic, who is dealing with a thumb injury. While the Lakers regulars got out to a nice lead in their minutes, the young guys at the end of the bench ultimately couldn’t close it out as the Suns came away with a 118-114 win. Davis got off to a quick start as he caught a lob from Austin Reaves and then connected on a 3-pointer. Davis then found D’Angelo Russell for a layup to give the Lakers an early 11-7 lead.
