On Monday, June 30, the Pistons agreed to a two-year, $11 million contract with Paul Reed, the Free Press has confirmed. According to a source who could not speak because the contract isn't official, the second year of the deal is non-guaranteed. It isn't yet clear if the team is signing Reed using their bi-annual exception, which allows for a two-year deal starting at up to $5.1 million, or through another cap method.
Shams Charania: Free agent C/F Paul Reed – aka BBall Paul – has agreed to a two-year, $11 million deal to return to the Detroit Pistons, sources tell ESPN. Reed played a versatile role for Pistons frontcourt, and the team and his agent Ron Shade of Octagon reached the new contract tonight.
Omari Sanfoka II: Can confirm Paul Reed has re-signed with the Pistons for two years, $11 million. Shams was first. A source tells me the second season is non-guaranteed. Their first move of free agency.
Cade Cunningham knows he’s walking into the unknown, but it’s way more of a waking-up-Christmas-morning anticipation than a sense of dread that washes over him and teammates who’ve never experienced the NBA playoffs as they count down the hours until Game 1 tips off Saturday in New York. “I’ve always picked my vets’ brains since my rookie year,” Cunningham said of leaning on Tobias Harris, Tim Hardaway Jr., Malik Beasley, Dennis Schroder and Paul Reed – who take a combined 240 games of playoff experience into the postseason with them – for an idea of what to expect. “There’s been conversations throughout my career, hearing stories about the craziest things that have happened. It’s all good. I think I’ve learned a lot from that, but experience is the greatest teacher. I’m excited to be out there.”
Pistons center Paul Reed, who was waived by Philadelphia in July, took a shot at his former team on social media Saturday night, posting, “They thought I was the problem,” Pompey adds. Asked to comment on Sunday, Nurse replied, “I don’t have a response. We certainly didn’t think Paul Reed was a problem.”

Sarah Todd: Paul Reed bumped into Jordan Clarkson and then the ram into each other again. (Double techs awarded). Then Ron Holland and Clarkson square up on each other and get ejected. JC throws his headband to some fans and double peaces on his way into the tunnel.
Michael Scotto: The Detroit Pistons signed Paul Reed to a one-year, fully guaranteed minimum deal, league sources told @hoopshype . Detroit reaches the salary floor with this move. Pistons now have $14 million in cap space to use ahead of the trade deadline, which gives them a ton of flexibility.
Eric Pincus: The Pistons, by waiving Paul Reed Jr., are under the "floor" or the minimum team salaries. This is an under-covered area of the 2023 CBA that encourages team spending, punishing low spenders

Eric Pincus: Teams must get to the floor before the start of the regular season, lest they lose their share of the luxury tax distribution (currently about $19m). DET got there by claiming Reed before the season. Letting him go now gives them a day to get back up to the floor
Bobby Marks: Roster/Financial ramifications on the Paul Reed waiver in Detroit 💰Cap hit: $2.48M 💰Cap space: $15.5M 💰Below the minimum floor: $1,418,136 🏀Open roster spots: 2
Shams Charania: The Detroit Pistons are waiving center Paul Reed, sources tell ESPN. In 12 games, Reed has averaged 4.8 points and 2.3 rebounds in 10 minutes. The move was made to give Detroit roster and salary flexibility with the NBA trade deadline less than two months away.
After playing the best basketball of his career in Philadelphia last season, Paul Reed has been used sparingly in Detroit. Reed is expected to be available ahead of February’s trade deadline. Reed has a non-guaranteed contract this season and next season as well. Keep an eye on Reed as a potential salary filler in trade talks or to command a potential future second-round draft pick from a team seeking frontcourt depth on the trade market.
