Grant Williams on LaMelo Ball this offseason: He's been in the gym working out every single day

What have you witnessed from LaMelo this offseason as taking a step forward as a leader on and off the court? Grant Williams: He’s doing a lot of things that bring value. Not only his voice, but just his approach. He’s in there every single day. He’s there and present and I think is somebody we can look to and see like, ‘He’s actually putting the work in every single day, not this person who is away from us and claims to be doing the work.’ No, he’s doing it every single day. He’s doing every single workout, he’s being available. Not only just from a like, ‘Hey, let’s go do this.’ If maybe we do a mini camp, ‘Let’s organize this, I’ll take care of these guys, I’ll do this.’ So, he’s being very, very welcoming in a sense of as a leader and understanding that he’s going to have to take it to a more mature step in his role in order for us to be the best team possible.

How can Collin help him out? Grant Williams: His intensity, I think, will help him out, because his seriousness, his pressure, and his ability to not only take the scoring load off him will also be very valuable. Because now LaMelo doesn’t have to force these shots, because he has a guy like Tre Mann, he has a guy like Collin, he has some guys that can really offload that scoring opportunity but also give him a break.

Grant Williams: I feel great, physically just taking …

Grant Williams: I feel great, physically just taking it one day at a time. Rehab is a pretty slow process. There can be good days and bad days, but fortunately, I’m in a position now where I’m getting back on the court in some capacity. Not necessarily there for contact yet, but in terms of (being) able to perform and work out, that’s something I think brings serenity — shooting the ball well, talk trash. So I’m trying to still find better shooters in the gym to compete against.

Grant Williams, a Mavs player at the top end of the 2023-24 season, was the victim of the scoring explosion, as detailed by the assistant general manager, Michael Finley, about one year ago. “A player in our team, I won’t call his name out, but it was Grant Williams, who decided he wanted to get under Luka’s skin. He thought Luka didn’t come that day ready to practice,” he said, “To make a long story short, we had a scrimmage going, and he’s talking trash to Luka up and down the court. So, finally, Luka says, ‘Okay.’ And I tell you, Luka went on a 26-6 run by himself. You can ask anybody. I’m not exaggerating.”

Grant Williams: I think Nico tried to do right by Luka

Grant Williams: I think Nico tried to do right by Luka

Grant Williams: "Now, I do think Nico tried to do right by Luka. Because I don’t think Luka ever wanted to leave Dallas — ever. But if he had to leave, the only teams he’d even consider going to were maybe: L.A. Miami Or another team of that level. So, in Nico’s mind, maybe he thought, ‘Okay, let me send him somewhere he’d accept.’" "But realistically — if Nico had gone to Luka, or even to his agent, and said, ‘Hey, this is the deal we’re thinking about…’ That would’ve made all the difference. Instead, it felt like it was just done — no heads-up, no respect."

Grant Williams: I’m in a great situation here in Charlotte, where I really believe these guys — the front office, the coaching staff — they’re driven to make this team the best organization in the NBA. They care about that. It’s a real passion for them. And I hope to be a part of that process — to help build that. Because I’m from Charlotte. I care deeply about this team, this organization, and this entire process.

Grant Williams: 'I was able to find my love for basketball again here in Charlotte'

Grant Williams: But in all honesty, it’s been the most refreshing thing I could’ve asked for in my NBA career. I was able to find my love for basketball again here in Charlotte. I rediscovered that passion, that care, that charisma to go out every single day and perform at my best. I was playing some of the best basketball of my career — especially right when I got traded here and at the start of the season. Then I got hurt… But even through that, I’ve been surrounded by community and support — not just from my family, but from the organization. Honestly, it’s given me extra life to play the game I love."

Grant Williams: And to be honest, I could probably do a better job of sharing mine — because people might want to see what I went through, the struggles. But at the same time, you want to push through it privately. It’s a little bit of both. The journey is difficult. I’ve broken down into tears more this year than I have in the past 26 years of my life. You just have to be mindful of your mental health — and strengthen it. Because it’s just as important as your physical health."

Grant Williams:Even when I started therapy, I realized I had been coasting for four or five years in the league. Just going through the motions: go to work, go to shootaround, play, repeat. Not even feeling the emotions of each day. But now? I can say, ‘Yeah, today sucked.’ I don’t ignore that anymore. And just because today was rough doesn’t mean tomorrow will be. It doesn’t mean yesterday was. But acknowledging the moment matters. It lets me say, ‘Maybe I need to take care of myself. Maybe I need to walk the dogs, or go on a date with my girlfriend — anything to reset.’ That’s the mindset now. That’s the framework I try to live by."

Harrison gave up control of the Mavs' first-round …

Harrison gave up control of the Mavs' first-round picks from 2027 through 2030 while making that series of successful trades, as well as the sign-and-trade deal for forward Grant Williams that didn't work out well. He has said that he believes he built a team for a "three- to four-year time frame" to contend with titles, although injuries ruined the Mavs' hopes this season. "We believe in the move we made," Harrison said when asked how the logic of a time frame that ends as the team enters a stretch when it doesn't control its first-round picks is in the franchise's long-term best interests. "You obviously don't, and that's fine. You're entitled to your opinions, but we're excited. ... I think once we win, then that will change your mind."
