Jason Thompson retires

Jason Thompson is trading in his basketball sneakers for a whistle. The Rider legend and former lottery pick announced his retirement on Monday following a 13-year professional career, eight of which he spent in the NBA, and will join the men’s basketball staff as a special assistant to head coach Kevin Baggett. “As I reflect on my career, Rider University has done so much for me both on and off the court – academically and through the basketball program,” Thompson said in a statement. “Rider University has helped me on the court to become a 13-year pro and off the court to start the Jason Thompson Foundation, a leadership program and give back to the community. Even though I am retiring, I will not be leaving the game of basketball. I can’t think of a better way to still be around the game than by coming back to Rider. … I’m excited to be here and looking forward to taking the next steps into my new journey.”

The 76ers’ Fieldhouse in Wilmington, Del., was the only open gym in town and became a refuge for athletes. Basketball coach and trainer Tony Paris organizes the workouts and has been running summer hoops for Philly and South Jersey’s best for more than 16 years. The who’s who of local pros from the NBA and overseas showed up to the Fieldhouse. It was their only option. Villanova alums Jalen Brunson and Omari Spellman, Philly natives Brad Wanamaker, Amile Jefferson and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, plus South Jersey players like Jason Thompson and Louis King, just to name a few. Most of the private sessions have about 15-20 players — enough to make up three teams and alternate without too much time on the sidelines.
