On Saturday in Phoenix, the Basketball Hall of Fame announced Vince Carter, Chauncey Billups, Michael Cooper, Seimone Augustus, Jerry West, Herb Simon, Doug Collins, Bo Ryan, Walter Davis, Charles Smith, Dick Barnett, Harley Redin and Michele Timms will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in August.
Galloway is one of the more well-respected sneakerheads in the NBA. His collection now includes about 1,000 pairs and is split up between his suburban Detroit residence and hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Galloway’s imprint in the sneaker community helped him earn a shoe deal with startup shoe company Q4 almost two years ago. The company provides the silhouettes as a canvas for his creative freedom. The logo is always visible. Every animated concept is generated by Galloway, a suggestion derived from the 10-year-old version of himself that still resides somewhere in his brain. From there, Galloway then relays his ideas to the two people he’s trusted in resurrecting his boyhood, Minnesota artists Salvatore Marcum, 26, known online as “MPLS Customs,” and Andrew Lewis, 32, better known as “ANDR3WTL.” Galloway was introduced to the shoe-based illustrators through hometown friend and WNBA star Seimone Augustus, who has played for the Minnesota Lynx since 2006.
There is rarely a discussion of gay rights issues in the NBA, where it's still difficult to imagine an openly gay athlete. That's not the case in the WNBA. Minnesota Lynx star Seimone Augustus is a WNBA champion, two-time Olympic gold medalist and outspoken lesbian. She recently took a stand against a ballot measure in Minnesota that could ban same-sex marriage in the state constitution. "Everyone thinks that the WNBA is one big lesbo party anyway," she said in an interview with the Associated Press. "So I think the coming out process isn't as tough for us because people already expect it."
Vincent said an online blog report by SPORTSbyBROOKS.com that O’Neal is resisting having the statue installed is inaccurate. “He’s never been resistant about it,” Vincent said. He also denied information in the report that LSU has plans to erect statues of former basketball greats Maravich, Bob Petit and current WNBA star Seimone Augustus.
In an effort to convince O’Neal to accept the honor, LSU has gone so far to already complete the statue, which features the future basketball hall of famer dunking a basketball while wearing his familiar LSU #33 jersey. As of today, O’Neal has not budged on his unwillingness to have his bronzed, life-size likeness placed outside the LSU basketball practice facility. But with the current Boston Celtic closing in on retirement, I have a feeling that sentiment will probably change once O’Neal’s playing days are over. Not to mention O’Neal has already donated the money for the completion of the Seimone Augustus statue!
